Kasi az gorbehaye irani khabar nadareh [No One Knows About Persian Cats] (2009) 1/10
Undoubtedly very brave from a political point of view, but as a movie this film about the underground music scene in Tehran is totally unimpressive. I gave up after 40 minutes.

Pantaleón y las visitadoras [Captain Pantoja and the Special Service] (2000) 2/10
Although based on a novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, this Peruvian movie feels like your average Hollywood comedy (i.e. not funny). An army officer is sent to the jungle on a top secret mission to provide the soldiers in the outposts with the service of 'visitors', aka prostitutes, to raise morale. His efficient approach turns the enterprise into a booming business. The girls, of course, enjoy their work a lot. And will the married officer be able to withstand the most irresistible of the girls? *sigh*

Mi mejor enemigo [My Best Enemy] (2005) 6/10
About a group of 6 Chilean soldiers lost in the endless Pampas on the southern border with Argentina, stumbling upon a squad of enemy soldiers. It's 1978 and the two countries are at the brink of war over some disputed islands. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, however, the soldiers start to befriend each other. The Pampas aren't the most exciting film location and the characters do not develop very much, but it's an enjoyable little innocent film.

El baño del Papa [The Pope's Toilet] (2007) 6/10
Charming and realistic movie from Uruguay. In 1988 Pope John Paul II visited the village of Melo, near the Brazilian border. Expecting tens of thousands of followers to attend the ceremony, the poor locals hoped to profit by selling food and providing services. The film depicts one such local family in the build-up to the event.

Los Viajes del Viento [The Wind Journeys] (2009) 6/10
Road movie about an old accordion player and a teenager traveling through the impressive landscapes of northern Colombia - by boat, donkey or on foot. The story borrows from Faust and the Odyssee, but, as is too often the case in road movies, plot and ending are poor. The music and the photography make it an enjoyable film nevertheless.

Frygtelig lykkelig [Terribly Happy] (2008) 6/10
Danish dark comedy is a modern Western about a new cop in a remote town, seduced by a femme fatale. Great atmosphere, but the story is slightly sloppy.

    Leonera [Lion's Den] (2008) 7/10
Argentinian drama about a pregnant woman getting convicted for murder, giving birth in prison and trying to raise her child in prison while other powers try to take it away from her. The film touches on many aspects of prison life, suffers from some genre clichés, but can never be really pinned down. It's like the main character, who remains unfathomable and unpredictable.

    Tony Manero (2008) 7/10
Santiago in the late seventies. Chilean Tony Manero impersonator (the dancer in Saturday Night Fever) uses the style of the Pinochet regime in trying to realize his escapist dream. Grim, minimalist and allegorical.

En kärlekshistoria [A Swedish Love Story] (1970) 7/10
Roy Andersson's debut feature film shows the developing romance of two teens set against the disappointed adults that surround them. A tribute to youth. Very different from Andersson's later masterpieces, but worth seeing.

    Black Swan (2010) 7/10
Undoubtedly a powerful film, although I thought the hand-held camera, the gloomy colours and the horror movie-like imaginary sequences and scary reflections made it all too artificially tense. Plot elements like the rivalry between dancers, the overbearing mother and the creepy artistic director cause enough tension, no need to bring in all the filmic tricks. To put it in the terminology of the film: Black Swan is made with an overdose of 'white swan' technique. Aronofsky never lets go.

Fisshu sutôrî [Fish Story] (2009) 8/10
A comet is on its way to destroy earth and we're just a few hours away from impact, but the owner of a record shop in Tokyo is sure that a track of a 1975 punk record - including a minute of silence - will save humankind. Its the start of a truly creative, playful and likable movie that jumps trough time but puts all parts of the puzzle nicely together at the end, resulting in a guaranteed smile on your face. My snapshot from the film has so far only been solved twice, whereas the movie really deserves a cult following. So my advice: go get it! ;-)

La vida de los peces [The Life of Fish] (2010) 8/10
Fascinating, touching and immensely melancholic, this sort of real time account of a 33-year old man at a party, meeting old friends he hasn't seen for ten years. It's just talking heads, but dialogues and acting in this Chilean movie are superb.

    Ane-eui aein-eul mannada [Driving With My Wife's Lover] (2006) 8/10
I had seen it once before, in 2007, but watched it again. And it was even better than I remembered. Playful Korean debut feature film with unexpected twists and visual brilliance in every scene. A man finds out his wife is cheating on him and prepares for revenge. But is he the type for such a thing?

    Machuca (2004) 8/10
The 1973 military coup against Salvador Allende, seen through the eyes of an 11-year old upper-middle class student - making it a semi-autobiographical film by director Andrés Wood. Brilliant casting and a beautifully indirect (but all the more effective) way of telling the story of a dramatic episode in the history of Chile.

    Revanche (2008) 9/10
Beautifully shot and intelligent Austrian drama/thriller. It's about a bank robbery that goes wrong, but more so about the motivations and relations of the people involved.

"The Abominable Snowman" (1957) A Hammer production directed by Val Guest with of course Peter Cushing. Very good one, with nice pictures of mountains, an intelligent plot, and a nice b&w photography in scope. Very frightening even if the horror (the yetis) are only suggested (you can see them just 3 minutes before end and during only 10 seconds...) And the" philisophy" of the movie is quite interresting... 8/10.

The last one however, the plot is really thin, but the gore and kills are even better and more. The 3D was quite unnecessary.
Hopefully the 7th will really be the last chapter:)
The whole series is nice to watch, the movies only take 90 minutes each.

"Dracula: Prince of Darkness" (1966) is the sequel of the TerrenceFisher's "Dracula" It's directed by Fisher himself and Dracula is of course played by a good Christopher Lee. The terror is well brought, very slightly, especialy before Dracula's rebirth. Then the fear is permanently distilled by Fisher. The photography is very nice with powerfull colors (especially the reds of course !!). Not the best Fisher movie but a good one 7,5/10.

The Fighter, 79/100 - I agree with theoffice. Two more things, though - I loveee boxing it's violent and dangerous but it's also amazing to watch - the boxing scenes were FANTASTIC and the fact they included commentary in the background only made them more exciting. Also I was expecting very serious, grim movie and it was filled with humour and very entertaining. Leo, Adams and Walhberg are great but it's finally Bale time for Oscar - he plays very selfish and weak person but it's impossible not to feel for him and like his character. He's also hilarious in many moments. The brothers' relationship and the whole family bond is wonderfully presented and very believable.

This is really stupid (I mean REALLY stupid!!!), yet some parts made me laugh. But I'm not a big fan of the french comedians "Eric and Ramzy". Too first degree for my taste. But this new director Quentin Dupieux definitely has something original to say ha ha ha. He just should have chosen other actors ;)

Wouaaa!! Fantastic animation. It blew me away. It's been a long time I wanted to discover Bill Plympton's work and I'm not desapointed, I may have watched his best cause it is closed to perfection. A wonderfull animation for adults. Cynical but at the same time poetic, I was smiling like an idiot the all movie. No need to have a 3D, computer animation, this moves me a lot more! This is simple but really nicelly made, some of the scenes are drawned with some beautiful angles clearly inspired by cinema, it is fantastic. And the story telling is just amazing

    Alice in Wonderland (Burton)
When the movie was first announced I was very excited about it. After months of reading disapointing comments from people, I was expecting the worse. With my low expections, i actually thought it wasn't so bad. For a Burton, it is a bad one imo, but it is also pleasant to watch. The animated parts are not that well done sometimes (especially the horses, real horses would have looked a lot better) and I simply would have liked it to be totally real with puppets or something, animated parts like these are lacking some soul these days and I'm a nostalgic from the 80's in that sense. The all movie I thought how much I would have liked it if it was just real, even badly made, it would have looked better than that. But still I watched it with kids eyes and I still thought some parts were nice :)

"Banshun" (1949) (Late Spring) Noriko lives with her father after her mother's death. Her aunt and her father want her to get married. But she doesn't want any change in her life and says she's happy like that. Finally she will accept and make a last travel with her father. A key movie in the carrier of Ozu the transition with the last part of his work so rich in masterpieces... On the form there are quite no more camera moves, the camera begins to adopt the unique position she will have in his last movies, there are still some variation in the focal lenght of the objective. He begins to develop the art of the composition that will be the center of his following movies. He begins also to film some empty shots i.e. shots of empty rooms to symbolise th time going and the brevity of life. The central theme of his work (the time going...) begins to appear very clearly and wont leave him during the last part of his work. In this movie we can also watch two of his favourite actors Chishu Riu & of course the wonderfull Tetsuko Hara. A masterpiece of sensibility, emotion and art. Fascinating !! 10/10 of course

"L'argent" (1928) The best movie I've watched for months... This is the last silent movie of the director Marcel L'Herbier. It is the adaptation of the eponymous novel of Emile Zola written in 1891. L'Herbier transmpose the story in present (1928 of course) but such story is by definition a-temporal it could have been in 2008 or 2018... Concerning the story t follows almost the story of Zola, a story of money, power and love. Concerning the form it's simply impressive !! Visualy It gathers all the innovations of the avant-garde cinema of the 20's, great movements of camera, various angles, etc... The editing is very modern with a great number of shots, sometime very rapid, the camera very mobile that follows the characters stick to thier movings (and let them no escape or intimity), many close-up alterning with wide shots with very shot focal-length... and many other finds... (I could write dozens of pages !!). The acting is very good and if actors plays with their face (it's a mute movies), they also play with their body, their weight, thier height (see the scene between the Banker Saccard (an incredible Pierre Alcover) and the Countess Sandorf (the fabulous Brigitte Helm) , one of the most erotic scene you can imagine). There are also many scenes of crowd (especialy in the Stock Exchange of Paris) wonderfully filmed and which reinforce the feeling of the strength of corruption of money on masses, indeed the crowd seem always agressive, full of hatred. The hate of money and speculation is so strong in the movie that it transform the characters in allegories, makes the movie become frightening, with an awfull coolness... and finaly a-temporal. You MUST watch this 10/10.
In comparison "WallSteet" looks like a pale B movie... and I'm not kidding...

    The Karate Kid (2010) 4/10
Nice, sharp postcard images of Beijing, but utterly predictable, sentimental and moralistic. And bad acting too. I suppose it's meant to be exciting and reassuring for children.

    Toy Story 3 (2010) 4/10
Admittedly, there is something intelligent about making this sequel in which the old toys are disposed of. Also, the scenes of the first encounters with the kids in the day-care centre are hilarious. But all the fun is skillfully smothered by this suffocating blanket of family values, respect, care for the environment (!) and other hypocritical American shit.

To verdener [Worlds Apart] (2008) 4/10
17 years old daughter of a Jehova's Witness starts to doubt her faith. Rather cliché Danish coming-of-age film.

    Bibliothèque Pascal (2010) 5/10
A 'heroic failure', I read somewhere, and that's spot on. A young Hungarian woman tells a social worker the story of her life - which we then see unfolding in somewhat fantastic ways. But the film is trying too hard to show scenes that are special and loses its cohesion in the process.

Ahiru to kamo no koinrokkâ [The Foreign Duck, the Native Duck and God] (2007) 6/10
A film that Yoshihiro Nakamura made two years before Fish Story. There is a similarity in the approach: the story is fragmented until the last act, when everything falls neatly into place. The difference is that the build-up is far less exciting.

    True Grit (2010) 6/10
Now what is this? You have some actors memorizing lines from a novel set in 19th-century Arkansas as if they are performing in a school play, film them out in the open, and call it a classic Western? The Coen brothers have done better than this. There's Jeff Bridges doing his funny voice act, there's Matt Damon with - haha - a moustache, and there's a brave little girl doing the does-she-have-the-guts-to-shoot-the-bad-guy act (twice), but that's about as exciting as it gets.

Keimusho no naka [Doing Time] (2002) 6/10
Unconventional Japanese prison drama, based on an autobiographical manga story. A middle aged man is sentenced to three years in prison for the possession of a gun. Inside, life is only about following strict rules and routines. As everyone else, he unquestioningly surrenders to the regime and finds peace in this new lifestyle. Although plotless, the film is interesting for its minute observations and gentle irony.

    Antares (2004) 6/10
Austrian film weaves together three stories about three inhabitants of an anonymous housing block in Vienna. Its message seems to be that life is all about deceit, lies, violence and sexual frustration. The characters feel authentic, but that doesn't necessarily make them very interesting.

    The Fighter (2010) 7/10
Not a bad drama, although the main character (Mark Wahlberg) is strangely standing by passively while Christian Bale and Melissa Leo are acting their socks off. As it's based on a true story, it's hard to criticize the predictable heroic outcome and the obligatory setbacks in the build-up. Guaranteed Oscar for the hairdresser of the seven sisters.

    Entre les murs (2008) 9/10
Frighteningly realistic account of the power struggle in a Parisian high school classroom.

Well, I guess family values and respect are sort of acceptable, but not if there's too much preaching involved. ;-) (Didn't see Capra's film.)
I understand that Bale was intended to overpower his younger brother, but that didn't totally work for me. I saw Wahlberg as a pretty confident tough guy, only he didn't do or say much. Maybe it also didn't help that in reality he is older than Bale, not younger. Anyway, as I said, it's certainly an OK film.

I agree with @Antituur for "toy Story" (and many others US movies indeed) but I agree also with @theoffice911 because Capra's movies are great, Capra is a great great director but there is also a big difference because Capra's movies are always full of bitterness and if the good values prevails at the end it's always thanks to a miracle (they reamain very fragile during the movie), and everybody knows (and Capra too) that miracles... Capra believes in man's kindness for sure but is not fooled, so there is a big ambiguity in Capra's movie but not in "toy story"...
@theoffice I prefer "Meet John Doe" (more dark), but "it's a wonderfull life" is a good one too...

"The Creation of the Humanoids" (1962) A very strange movie, despite the tittle it's a very impressive Sci-F Movie. The budget is very very low but the background is huge. In the future human kind after a nuclear holocaust is reduced to some thouthands of citizens but the fecondity is very low so they created lots of robots to do all the jobs... But robots become more and more perfect and some of them imagine creating robots more than human to replace the government and avoid another war because robots are unable to kill and do the evil. Some say that they have allready done it, an undetectable robot... But a group of human is against it and want to keep the robots at a lower level of developement. Kenneth Cragis is one member of this group and his sister Esme is in love with the robot Pax... The movie is very cheap without special effects but the make-up are made by Jack Pierce (he made Karloff's mak-up for Frankenstein)... It's quite speaky but they dialogs are very good with a good reflexion on prejudices, what is to be human, the difference... An intelligent B movie with timeless messages. 8/10.

Yes, I can enjoy movies quite fast, hence the relative high votes.
And yes, I hadn't seen any of those big names up here before. Now I can start guessing while looking at the shot, and not at how much users solved it.

"Far from Heaven" (2002) good performance of Julian Moore. The movie is nice filmed but is almost very predictible. The movie goes about (too) many problems and then don't treat them as deep as they should have been... The same year Julian moore had a similar role in "The Hours" which is much better in my opinion. 6,5/10

    Léon

And I was pleasantly surprised! Never thought very high of this movie, because I always thought I never liked Jean Reno. But after seeing le Grand Bleu and Léon I've changed my mind. What a great guy he is! He is charming in his own unique way and he can really portray a certain character. The only weird thing in the movie for me was the relationship between Mathilda (Portman) and Léon (Reno). It was just too awkward to me.

    8 out of 10!

Ah, you read the list, funny. ;)
And well, ofcourse there are some exceptions, but I'm a simple viewer, I just like it or not. Some cliché's I like and some not. If I sleep bad there's a chance I will give movies a lower vote.
    Ah, I'm so simple.

So in Bad biology, we had a monster killer penis and in Teeth, a killer pussy. These are all very interesting movies....

Yes, surprised me too. My lowest Kubrick untill now. I think I just expected something
much different from that movie and when I watched it my enthousiasm kind of died. I think
another view would help me appreciate it more. But not just yet :)
