Omnibus film by female Asian directors Wang Jing, Anocha Suwichakornpong and Kaz Cai that focuses on love. In all parts a character named Wei is having a meal, first in Nanjing, then somewhere in Thailand, and finally in Singapore. Sensitive, but slow.

Un poison violent [Love Like Poison] (2010) 7/10
Nice coming-of-age debut feature film about a 14-year old French girl whose parents just broke up, who is doubting her religious upbringing and who is influenced by a teenage boyfriend and a rebellious grandfather.

    Todos tus muertos (2011) 8/10
Colombian farmer finds a pile of corpses on his land and tries to have the authorities handle the situation. With elections going on, no-one really wants to give him attention. And moreover, who is in charge in this maze of corruption and power struggles? Very entertaining, well acted and beautifully shot.

The King's Speech : funny, clever, marvelous acting, simple but dense, good directing to. Spoiler : a fantastic scene about the famous speech, music, editing, acting, everything is perfect ! I haven't had this feeling since a loooong time ago.
The Way Back : very disapointed by the beginning, too fast, full of clichés, no psychologie. And once again Mark Strong as a vilain... I can't see him anymore ! The "journey" part is better, beautiful photo, but the emotion is so flat sometimes... The purpose of the ending is weird to.

Fine Australian crime movie seen from the perspective of a 17 year old who is thrusted into a family of criminals. Dark and intense. Great role of Jacki Weaver as the mother of the gang. Based on a true story.

    Incendies (2010) 9/10
After the death of their mother, Canadian twins Jeanne and Simon are sent on a quest to the Middle-East to find the truth about their family. Great mix of personal, social and political issues. Brilliant story-telling and structure. Maybe one or two coincidences too many.

A difficult, intense and beautiful film, Natalie Portman's work was impressive! The annoying thing was the people sitting behind me complaining about the film all the time and saying things like "What a crazy girl" and "I can't wait for this to end". Really pissed me off.

    Yesterday's movies.

"Germania Anno zero" (Roberto Rossellini, Italy 1948). Third part of his war trilogy, Berlin just after war. Edmind, 12 year old and is family are struggling for life. One day Edmund meets his ancient teacher who was an active member of the nazis. After some discussions, Edmund is convinced that he has to murder his sick father to allow the other to survive. A terrible drama very moving and striking. Wonderfull directing in a pure neorealist style, great acting. Must to see 10/10.

"Alice in Wonderland" (Norman Z. McLeod, U.S.A. 1933) Definitively not Tim Burton's adaptation. This one is really sweet and peacefull, very oniric (not a nightmae). The cast is very impressive the little Charlotte Henry is vry cute in the role of Alice and a bunch of stars are in : Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, W.C. Fields and many others !! Of course we can't recognize them behind thier disguises (eccept Cooper as the White Knight very funny and pathetic). McLeod Directing is a bit static but the universe is here, the setting and the costumes are wonderfull and are excactly those imagined by John Tenniel in the original edition of the book. The script written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and William Cameron Menzies is very faithfull to the original (missig the lion, the unicorm and the train). An enjoyable moment 8/10.

"Scared to Death" (Christy Cabanne, U.S.A. 1947) Yes, it's pure B movie a Golden Gate Picture production... Yes Christy Cabane os not the best director in the world (far away from it) hes' just one of thos kings of the B's who directed more than 160 movies all forgotten now, (The mummy's Hand, The man who walked alone...). But this movie, a classical mix of thriller, horror and comedy, is quit enjoyable. It's the only occasion you'll have to see Bela Lugosi in color !! The cast includes the great George Zucco too. The plot is interresting and the suspense is here. The acting is not very good indeed as usual in thos type of production. So a small B for fans. 5/10. (7/10 for B geeks)

"The Tall T" (Budd Boetticher, USA 1957). Losely adapted by Burt Kennedy from the famous story by Elmore Leonard "3:10 to Yuma" this western is one of the best of the great and famous colaboration betwen Budd Botticher and the great Randolph Scott. Here, a rich girl and her husband are kidnapped by mistake by thieves, they kidnapp a farmer, Brennan (Scott) who was there too. They want 50.000 $ from the father of the girl. Brennan tries to keep every one alive and to turn gunmen against each others before the money arrive and they get killed. An excellent western, short (77 mins) like all "B" western Boetticher made concise and remarkably directed. Filmed in natural huge landscape, the movie alternates long sequences of landscape, travelling, and discussion with the very short and very violent scenes of gunfights. Scott is as usual monolithic and unshakeable, but the second characters are well depicted too. Those westerns of Boetticher/Scott together with those of Mann/Stewart can be considered as the quintessence of the western, they must be watch again... 8,5/10.

"Shi ba ban wu yi" (Legendary Weapons of China) ( Chia-Liang Liu, Hong-Kong 1982) A great Shaw Brothers production with all the stars of the company (Gordon Liu etc...) The plot i of course very simple but the choregraphy is awsome, the fights very numerous (that' sthe center of much of those B movies) and inventive. Nice settings as in most brothers productions. A classic of Honk-Kong B's... for fans only... 7,5/10.

"Decision at Sundown" (Bud Boetticher, USA 1957) Another incredible collaboration Boetticher/Scott. A wonderfull western. A great screanplay comletly original and incredible by Charles Lang jr. A wonderfull and sober directing, great acting by Randolph Scott, even the second roles are well dpicted and deep... Only the lack of means can disturb a bit but it can be seen as a richness indeed. A pure masterpiece a must ot see for all western fans. 9,5/10.

"Heroes for Sale" (William A. Wellman, USA 1933) A great Social Movie of the Warner. They just could do it because the code was still not there and/or active. Wellmann gives here a lesson of humanity in this strongly "red" coloured movie. Even now, it's not sure that Hollywood could let do suche movie... Very good direction (the war scenes, and the riot ones are huge), good acting. Another lost gem. 9/10.

"Contre-toi" (Lola Doillon, France 2010). Or how to do Bad movie without knowing it (I hope so)... Christine Scott Thomas is certainly a good actress but she doesn't seem to be able to chose a screanplay... perhaps did she not even read this one. Lola Doillon can't write a screanplay (later perhaps if daddy helps her) and can't direct a movie (later perhaps if daddy helps her, but he seems to have some difficulties since "Ponette"). Thin and improbable story, bad dialogs, bad directing and editing (If you're attentive you can watch manytime the microphone pending in the screen (yes, like in an Ed Wood Movie). Seriously ?? Those people pretend to do cinema ?? They're just messing around... that's unforgivable. Sad, another reason to watch oldies... 2/10 (and I'm very kind).

The movie starts well and overall it was a good theme and ideas but the more it goes the more you realize how stupid and cliches those characters are, actually the all movie is dumb and the situations are even more dumb and unrealistic. There are some good music in it, the problem is: the music doesn't go at all with the movie, I mean really not ^^ This is a story about anarchist activists or so the director wanted us to believe, come on, we want some punk music lol not this!!
Oh and Oh my god the slow motions with the "emotional" scenes, this was truly painful

Resident Evil Extinction = the beginning was pretty good but then it's genreic shooting and chasing. but overall I guess it's my favorite part of the saga, since I gor scared many times and zombie crows were fun to watch - 54/100
Conviction - terrific movie with superb performance by Sam Rockwell - this guy is like Bale before "The Fighter" - so many fantastic performances and so few awards. Hilary Swank was also very good, Juliette Lewis delivers nice performance and the story is amazing. I hate the institution of statue of limitations and although the movie is not about it, but mentions it along the way it potrays well how stupid that thing is, plus it shows wonderful relationship between siblings, 87/100
Welcome to the Rileys - interesting film with great work from Stewart and Gandolfini and Melissa Leo who finally doesn't play trash, it's nice to see her in a different role, 72/100
Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith - Hayden Christensen has gotta be one of the worst actors ever and the dialogues were truly atrocious. I'm not a fan of SW, the effects were cool, the music was good and I liked Mcgregor's work. But after seeing Black Swan so many times it hurts how bad Natalie Portman can suck on screen, although comparing to Christensen she was amazing, 50/100
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake) - good horror movie, very creepy and very sick. I never saw original so I don't know how I'd feel about remake if I did, but it was a good movie and for the first time Jessica Biel didn't annoy me, 70/100

during last 48h I saw (I'm having my winter vacation:)):

Rasputin, 73/100 - good movie with great performance by Alan Rickman, but having read a bit about Rasputin I was disappointed how tame the movie seemed, after all the things that happened in reality were pretty shocking and definetly more, shall I say saucy than him stripping in front of Russian elite.

Mesmer, 40/100 - again great performance by Rickman, but apart from that, as interesting the story, music and cinematography are the movie is very boring and at times, quite ridiculous.

Crazy Heart, 74/100 - well deserved Oscar for Jeff Bridges who has amazing singing abilities too, nice performances by Colin Farrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal and overall quite engaing movie, but Bridges it's the best thing about it.

Secretary, 78/100 - very original, fascinating and sexy film, but I was disenchanted with how things started to unravel towards the end, the movie suddenly became ridiculous and I lost interest. Maggie Gyllenhaal delivers her best performance here and James Spader is amazing.

Predators, 30/100 - boring and quite hilarious piece of shit. The dialogues were just embarassing, the story went nowhere and I didn't have big expectations - I wanted to see action, guts and Brody. Well Brody delivered, having run shirtless around fire. The only redeeming thing about this movie.

All About Eve, 90/100 - fantastic film, great atmosphere and astnnishing performance by Bette Davis. The movie is quite long but I couldn't wait what's gonna happen next, the characters are so wonderfully complex and their interactions are thrilling to watch. "Black Swan" definetly took a lot from this one.

Eden Lake, 70/100 - shocking film. The worst part is that "kids" like this exist out there, everywhere you look. There are few movies that show that people can be worse than animals and this one definetly did that. I was sick to my stomach. Having said that, the way main characters behaved was quite stupid. When you see trash like that near you and you're in isolated area, for God sakes, just get the hell away from there.

I watched the wonderfull tetralogy of the sequels of the famous Karl Freund's "The Mummy" (1932)
The Mummy’s Hand (Christy Cabane, USA 1940) 7/10
The Mummy’s Tomb (Harold Young, USA 1942) 7/10
The Mummy’s Ghost (Reginald LeBorg, USA 1944) 6,5/10
The Mummy’s Curse (Leslie Goowin, USA 1944) 6,5/10

All the four moives deals with the same story... along many years and you can follow the apparition of Kharis who was buried alive 3000 years ago who want to find back his fiancée the priestess Ananka that some archeologists have stolen (in the first movie of the serie)... It's fun to watch all those famous B actors here Lon Chaney Jr is the mummy oin three episodes, Goerge Zucco is the High priest in two episodes and lot of other B stars like Martin Kosleck (He'l be famous in the Flesh Eaters) or Marthe Wickers (Captive Wild Woman, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman) or Nina Bara (Missile to the moon) Fern Emmett (Pillow of Death, Captive Wild Woman, The Devil Bat and many B westerns) Dick Foran (The Atomic Submarie, Horror Island) Anthony Warde who played in so many serials (Dick Tracy vs Crime inc, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon Trip To Mars). The plots are simple and the psycholgy of characters a bit rough but the directing is often good and sometime inventive despite the lack of means... Pure pleasure for B fans

I really have no idea why people would like such silly gymnastics-with-swords, performed by very serious looking men and women in what always seems to be the same Ancient China film set.

    Yang Yang (2010) 5/10
Taiwanese film about a Eurasian girl struggling with her identity. The images are beautiful, but I found the development of the story rather puzzling. Maybe the film is exciting for the Taiwanese because the lead role is played by Sandrine Pinna, a local star and a Eurasian herself - and thus, in this film, sort of playing herself?

    Down Terrace (2009) 7/10
Hilarious British crime movie that feels like a mix of Ken Loach and, ehm..., Coen brothers? Strange that IMDb-users rate it as low as they do (5.6).

The Kids Are All Right (2010) 7/10
Great characters, good acting, funny and convincing. But it is a comedy and never really gets poignant like, say, American Beauty or The Ice Storm, masterpieces in the American upper middle class suburban family life section.

    J'ai tué ma mère (2009) 7/10
Written at 17, directed at 19 by Canadian Xavier Dolan, this is a furious and somewhat hysterical semi-autobiographical account of the relation between a gay teenager and his single mother. It's a study into fights and a testing of filmic skills.

    Les amours imaginaires (2010) 9/10
This very impressive second feature film by Dolan is a beautifully impressionistic film about a love triangle. It sometimes looks like a tribute to Wong Kar-Wai, but who cares if it's done well? Extra points for the soundtrack.

OK, those are not the last movies I've seen, but I watched them during the last few weeks and want to encourage you people to watch some movies of the great actress Barbara Stanwyck. I'm so glad my favorite cinema did a Barbara Stanwyck retrospective this January and I'm still sad I hadn't the time to watch them all.

    Ball of Fire (1941).
A comedy about seven professors secluded from the real world working on an encyclopedia. Reaching the word "slang" one professor (Prof. Potts played by the great Gary Cooper) decides to do some field research where he meets burlesque performer Sugarpuss O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck). Since the police is searching for her as a witness against her boyfriend a mobster, she decides to hide with the seven professors (the reference to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is intentional). As is to be expected Sugarpuss jolts the seven professors out of her daily routine and even teaches them to dance Conga. Her mobster boyfriend wants to marry her so she can't be a witness against him but Sugarpuss has grown fond of the professors and especially of Potts. When she is taken away by her boyfriend the professors go on a hilarious journey to rescue her. Of course there is the right marriage in the end.
The movie is incredible fun to watch. The actors are top notch as is the script, which was written by Billy Wilder. And knowing that Howard Hawks directed this movie and Gene Krupa and his orchestra are featured in an extended night club scene, it should come as no a surprise this movie was nominated for four oscars (including best actress in a leading role and best writing, original story. Go and watch this great comedy if you have the chance. 8/10

    The Furies (1950).
A western starring Barbara Stanwyck, Wendell Corey and Walter Huston in his last role. Barbara Stanwyck plays again a strong female character as in most of her movies. Here she plays the beloved daughter of a cattle baron who runs the giant ranch of her father. However, her father is very self-centered and he runs into debt for a woman. When he shoots a childhood friend of her daughter who was illegally squatting on his property she runs away, cuts off all contact with her father and plots a revenge with the goal to leave her in possession of the big farm.
This is a very clever and interesting western. There are some well-known cliches like e.g. the cowboys singing around the fire, but the plot is very unconventional and the story always is taking some twists one didn't expect. Besides the great acting the movie also has a stunning cinematography which was nominated for an oscar. So, if you are into western you should check it out. It is a very refreshing and entertaining movie. 7/10

"Buchanan Rides Alone" (Bud Boetticher, USA 1958) Another Boetticher/Lang/Scott collaboration. One more time the plot is incredible and very original, the directing is excellent (for exemple the final gunfight on the bridge is completly crazy. Surprinsingly there are some humour at some moment (the other westenrs of the Boetticher/Scott are usualy very pessimistic). The characters are well depicted even the second ones. Very Good Western 8/10.

Centurion - 46/100 - well it wasn't awful, but it was a mess. Two good things - finally some blood - I remember watching King arthur and laughing my ass off as not a single drop of blood fell on the battlefield during the movie, second - Michael Fassbender - a treat for eyes and a great actor but he really has to chose better movies and I hope with "Jane Eyre" and "Dangerous Method" he has succeeded in that.

I think this may be the difference between the normal and the director's cut ;)

I'm afraid you are the one who is totally wrong when I saw the movie in the theatre there was just bullshit like him raiding fast on his horse towards the enemy with sword in his hand and when he reached the dude....he hit him in his leg with the back of the sword.
So I guess you're talking about DC. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349683/alternateversions
And blood on the faces is hardly gore, especially when it's artistically smeared on Keira' face with full eye make up :/

My Bloody Valentine, 50/100 - funny and entertaining slasher movie. It was stupid but at least it wasn't boring.
Where the wild things are, 60/100 - the film shows child's imagination beautifully but it fails to engage. There is too little background given to the character of Max and whilst the movie is very well made, the script lacks heart.

Old Dogs - don't watch this one, unless you're in a company of a 5 - 10 years old kid. This movie is everything but funny. I like Travolta, especially in Michael and Williams is a great actor and they weren't bad here, but this is one of those unnecessary movies which you won't remember 10 minutes after watching it. 3/10

"Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh" (Sergio Martino, Italy 1971). First Giallo of Martino he directed this one after the great success of Argento's "L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo". The screenplay here is more bloody and more erotic but who'll complain if the main character is the wonderfull giallo queen Edwige Fenech <3... Together with George Hilton you have one of the most famous couple of the giallo. The directing and editing are good, there ara some nice scenes (especially of nightmares) that are were well done with nice light and colors... A good one 8/10.

"Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley" (Marshall Neilan, USA 1918). A nice romance with Mary Pickford. Not her best movie but here with obvious political commitments. The critic of the hypocrisy of a certain upperclass who proclaims to be "social" is clearly shown even through the comedy. Mary Pickford is as usual excellent. To discover 7/10.

"The Mender of Nets" (D.W. Griffith, USA 1912) a short story of love square in a village of fishermen. Nice.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec
It's been a long time I stopped a movie half way through. Generally I always give the movies a chance until the end but this was not bearable....
Luc Besson did not need to make this for us to understand he didn't know how to make movies anymore, we knew that already
Since I haven't seen the end I wont rate it, I dont even feel like it... it is that bad lol

Hey there, i can see some of you are watching a lot of movies per month. I'm trying with two friends to finish the top 500 movies of empire online magazine and i'm looking for an extra guy/girl to take the challenge. You just need to be sure that you can watch at least 15 movies of the top per month.

Here is the link to the top : http://kinoute.org/top

if you are interested, give me a shout!

    cheers

Oh you don't need to watch them again! Our policy is just : If you don't remember the movie at all, then you have to watch it again. First you vote for all the movies you have already seen in the top and after that you see how many movies you have to watch to finish the top and you choose your 15 movies you need to see for the month.

But, even if you have "only" 100 movies left to watch in this top, it could be a good challenge. Let me know if you're interested
