First of all: Love the site!!

Secondly, I have some minor feature requests and a little bug.

Every time I upload a super duper awesome snapshot that apperently isn't as super as i thought (it's getting low ratings !!11), I can't help to wonder how many of retards voted a 1 (if any).
What I'm trying to say is, that it would be cool to see some breakdown of the score, maybe even some demographics (altough that may be not that usefull on low number of votes). Like on iMDB, for example: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1037705/ratings

Also something that would be nice (I think) would be to get a message of some sorts when somebody removes your vote for deletion. I find it very frustrating to see my votes removed, without any reason. It happened a lot when I tried to start a vote for deletion on some (very) bad quality snapshots. My wtm fellows all experienced a similar situation. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a good thing votes can be removed, to keep misuse to a minimum, but a reason of why your vote got removed would be nice.

Another (technical) note/question. Why does WTM serve all of its javascript as separate files? You could combine these files, and minify them. It could load the site a lot quicker, because now there are made like 20! http requests to static.wtm.com for js/css. I understand this is much easier to maintain, but there are some nice methods out there to help. There's a lot of info on this topic on the web, as you may know, here is at least one resource:
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/07/19/how-to-automate-optimization-and-deployment-of-static-content/

Lastly there is a small bug concerning adding/removing a fellow on accounts with a non-word character like the '.' in my nickname. "http://whatthemovie.com/friends/destroy/Maff." (note the [dot] on the end, instead of a [plus]) gives a 404 error and nothing happens. When changing the [dot] in a [plus] "http://whatthemovie.com/friends/destroy/Maff+" the site gives a error 500, but does what it's supposed to do (remove the fellowship).

    @tliff: thanks for your response.

About the js stuff: it seems to less of a deal than I originally thought. The caching headers seems to do their job, there are no request made after initial retrieving the files, not even to check if their updated (which is good). I thought this didn't work because when using the Chrome Resource Tracking it does request every file again.

Another feature request I have, but forgot to mention before: It would be awesome if you would be able to change/select the shot that represents a movie in your favourite movies collection http://whatthemovie.com/user/Maff+/favmovies (also visable on your profile page). Because now it's just the oldest one, which isn't necessarily the most beautiful one or best fitting for that particular movie. I understand that making it adjustable per user would involve quit some work, and is maybe a bit overdone. Another option would be to pick the highest rated snapshot of that particular movie, just as is done on the main movie page e.g. http://whatthemovie.com/movie/the_fall (where the bow dude is shown first, instead of the elephant).

The caching solution is quite smart and we cache really agressively, that's one of the reasons i havent come around to merging the js yet.

The snapshot is an excellent idea, i think that will be in the next update we push.

I really like Maff.'s breakdown idea. Would be very nice to know if your shot is just bad (everybody rating a 6) or if many people rated it 8 and above and some 1-votes took the rating down again. I'm just repeating this in the hope it will be promoted to "surely in the future" :)

It would even be nice to see a breakdown of the different votes on users pages, but maybe this would disturb the peace ;)

But now some own feature requests:

    * I mostly use the movie-bookmark-feature to remember movies I want to see after requesting the solution of a cool shot. But on the Bookmark-Overview I see only links to one shot of that movie (often not even the one I requested the solution for). So it is not easy to find a movie in the bookmark-list (what is why I bookmarked them in the first place). It would be nice, if the movie-pages would be directly linked so you would see the name of the movie in the link and maybe a more signicant shot of the movie.

    * When solving an unsolved shot you have to reload the page to know if you are first-solver - well just if you care, but I use to favourite first-solves and check therefor. If it is possible and not too much effort it would be great, if you could get a feedback without having to reload the page. For example the solving-field could turn yellow instead of green. Surely not one of the most needed features, but maybe a coder is bored sometime ..

    * Regarding the feature request: I think it is great how much you listen to the wishes of users in the forum. There are so many needful requests that it is hard to get an overview and to know wich ones may be implemented and wich ones are wanted most - even if you read through the more than 400 comments in this post. So it would be nice to have an overview somewhere showing what will be implemented asap|soon|maybeInTheFuture|probablyNever. So people could see what features are already worked on. The luxury version could even have a possibility for wtm-users to vote on features, so decisions could be made better than just according to some people posting in the forum that they like another idea. But I fully understand that you surely got so much to do that this Feature itself will be labled probablyNever :)

@fnick: I like your remark about the bookmarked movies, I've come across this issue as well. I vote for implementing this.
And about the issue tracking, there are a lot of (free/opensource) software projects and websites that could be used for this kind of stuff, there's no need to reinvent the wheel. There's a list/comparison on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_issue-tracking_systems

I'm quite new here, so excuse me if this was already suggested/noted (I looked but still...).

    1. Being new and starting from zero, I figured the best way to cover the FF section was going from the end and keep using the previous button, but every few snaps I get a red "Sorry, you are not allowed to view this snapshot."(why is that anyway?) and am thrown away to a random place. Wouldn't it make more sense to go to the previous/next snap?

    2. In the thumbnails screen the legend and filter don't seem to work for solved snaps (they don't show in green ot filter out) - it looks like my solves are not registered, but clicking on one I see it is solved.

    3. It seems almost nobody bothers to rate movies around here (me included), I think more people would if it was possible from the snapshot page. after you solve it you will be able to rate it and/or add it to your shelf, instead of going to the movie page to do so.

    4. When a solution is requested in the archive/vault you get the movie name with three dots, but the year is missing, which is a shame. In most cases the name won't mean anything, but the year is always relevant.

My bitching aside, This is a great site, loved the concept, and the people :)

I would also like to see an overview of the rejected snapshots. This can be done the same way as the FF-section (so you can see an overview per day or per month).
Sometimes I have the feeling that a snapshot is reposted in less than 2 weeks, but I cannot find a possible rejected snapshot, since there is no overview.

-Sometimes it will say "you are not allowed to view this snapshot right now" I think it has to do with the vault snapshots, because it is with periods that I get this error (note that I always have only show unsolved snapshots checked)
-Sometimes I will get solved snapshots, although I always have only show unsolved snapshots checked
-Today I noticed something really weard: click http://whatthemovie.com/shot/89024 and go next, next, previous, previous, next, next,... Very strange. Note: I haven't solved, any of the 4 snapshots you ancounter.

my english is not the best so i only read the last few comments

    i have some ideas too:

    1. i want a better overview of my Fellows. Now i have only 3 Fellows on my profil and down under there is a big empty grey field. It is possible to list more Fellows instead this grey field? Maybe every one can decide via "Settings" how many or all Fellows should be listed direct on the profil

    2. maybe its possible to mark Fellows online/not online now. Now i have to take a look of all online people (most more then 100) to see which Fellows are online now. I know some other sides there is a Light Blub in the corner of the Avatar if the user is current online. Or make in additional to Point 1. a list of online Fellows and down below a extra list the Fellows not online now.

    3. Sometimes i want take a look at a especially list of shots (for example all uploaded Shots of a User, or searching some shots with a tag). For example i click the first shot of the result of a list of "tree" tag, then i click "next" Button i see the next shot, which is the next in the FF-List. If i want see the next "Tree" Shot i have to go back to the overview and click the next shot in the overview. Thats inconvenient, especially if someone want see about 20-30 shots. I think its better the next/previous/first/last function should adapt the list your are in. If i click a shot in my favorits, the button "next" should show me the next favorit. Or i click on another user page the first FF-Shot of him, with "next" i want see the 2nd shot of him.

    4. in the overview i can read all shouts which people maked on my shots. Sometime i make a shout on shots of other people. If i want see if someone answer my shout there i have to bookmark the shot. But i have too many bookmarked shots already, its not easy to distinguish why i bookmarked it. Dont know, i think about 2 solutions: (a) i can mark shots of other people and i see new shouts on this shots in the overview like shouts of my own shots (b for better) i can create more lists of bookmarked shots. So i can sort my bookmarked shots in "want know the solution" "want read newer shouts" "want post a shot of the movie too and bookmark it only to see if a shot in NS make it to FF or not - or on which day it goes into FF to dont type 1000 of captchas in next 7 days"

and i like the idea of @fnick about the first solve should be marked in a another colour as green, to see without refresh if you are first solver or not

I noticed something that might be worth being fixed :
The thumbnails used for illustration in the "favourite movies" overview seem to be the first shot uploaded for each movie.
That's OK with me, except that it's actually sometimes a thumbnail from a deleted shot (hence distorted, not from DVD, ...). I think it should be automatically updated, then. To the next uploaded shot in the Archive for instance. Or, even better, maybe the thumbnail should be the best rated shot in the Archive, for every movie.

What lets him look like a very strange person to everybody who doesn't know there was a shout before mods went wild and did their funny deletion-or-sometimes-just-editing-thing.

@them00ch: sorry for using such a colourful language. I have to admit it sounds like "all mods are bad". I didn't want to say that. I just didn't see the reason for editing a shout on one shot and completely removing the same shout on another shot.

So since this thread is about thoughts and ideas I would recomment removing only the racial/off-topic content of a shout, but not the shout itself. So there would still be a shout saying something like "This shout has been deleted because of its content" similar to the shouts of deleted users.

I agree. I dont personally agree with editing shouts at all unless they contain something completely offensive, racist or hateful. It could probably be argued that "Spains sucks" is mildly xenophobic and therefore inappropriate, although in recent context it was obviously no more than a disappointed Dutch football fan ;) But it was spammed on almost every shot for the day, and was pretty annoying, the user in question was warned to stop, and I guess some of them were deleted.

I dont know for sure this is what the edited post said, but seeing all the other shouts from that user it's a reasonably safe assumption to make.

"This shout has been deleted because of its content" is a good idea. Thanks.

i have some new ideas for improvement.

lately, i've been using the next button to go through all FF (too much time in my hands), but despite the fact that in the overview i have selected "show only unsolved shots", when I'm on full mode and click next, i often go next 10 times just to see 10 shots that i have already solved or posted. It would be nice to exclude the already solved or own snaps from that view as well.

in the same fashion, it would have also been helpful when one goes into some other user's feature films to be able when clicks next to see his next snapshot instead of the next snapshot in the FF database. For instance, i go to Fungus and want to see all of his snapshots, it'd be nice to be able and see them all by clicking next, much like it works with the movie pages.

In addition, i think our tag system should be more consistent and filled. Before we upload a shot, each uploader should at least add three relevant tags to be able to post the snap. For instance, i was looking at an animated movie which had a bear, and i found the solution and tried to search for bear and no luck. I mean it was just a bear in the picture, and it should have been there to make my life easier by searching for a tag.

this has been suggested by me before, but i think it should be a great new function: a direct reply to users when they reply in shots. instead of having to say @ and name, simply have a reply button, like youtube.

last but not least, the bookmarks page isnt very practical. It would be nice to be able to see which shots have the solution ready so i don't have to click on every snapshot to see if its been 30 days or not. This could be done easily : if, when in overview of bookmarks, a shot has a solution available, can have a green or any color line underneath it. this could save time.

    thanks in advance.

Actually I think those are very good suggestions anestie made.
I think the tag system is one of the things which really needs improvement. I second the suggestion that it is mandatory for the uploader to give at least three tags for his shot. And I really miss multiple tag search as well as the possibility to exclude some strings as when you search for cartoon e.g. you get all shots tagged with car also.

It has already been proposed that there should be some kind of a shout on the profile if someone removes a vote for deletion. In the last two days my votes got removed at least 4 times, without any reason (and you guys know, I only vote for deletion when there really is a good reason, like really low quality etc.) like in this shot http://whatthemovie.com/shot/97157 This really is low quality, I votet for deletion and it got removed. This really is starting to annoy me, that some people misuse their power like this. People need to stop doing this or if they do it should be mandatory that they have to leave a shout why exactly they removed the vote. Because if I wouldn't have checked it again I never would know that it got removed...

I thought of a new feature yesterday that might be fun: spoiler tags. They only become visible after you have solved the shot, and perhaps after the 30 days. In those tags, you can add the actors' names, the city, specific building/monument etc. Basically every info that is visible in the shot, but would count as a spoiler. That way, you could for example search for "Johnny Depp" (:P) and get all the shots that has him in it.
