Yesterday I remembered the name of a movie and couldn't find the screen shoot, what if the poster could add tags to help us search the pictures? Simple tags like: dog; animation; whatever!!!
that would be helpful indeed. also, it would be a lot easier to find old snaps if we could travel between pages in overview mode. so we dont have to go next, next, next.
@pv Nice idea, yet it would kill the database, unless the servers are REALLY strong. I mean, 1 guy calling for all the movies is okay, but hundreds ? :D Well, you already have the overview by a hundred, you can open in a new window or tab (that's what I do because I don't like DB, they're mean).
tags are definitly worth talking about, but they have a low priority on our ToDo list (Which will be posted in the forum soon). @Starvey: I don't think tags would kill our server, we have a quite sophisticated backend. Tliff is always eager to code ressource friendly.
@Cotp: One problem would be that this could lead to lots of useless tags just to earn points. I don't think you would do that, but I'm pretty sure that we have some selfish players here who are just waiting for a chance like this to "earn" points easily.
"You'd already be amazed to the kind of alternative titles I see sometimes, also just to earn bucks. Sometimes even four times the same title!" Yeah I believe you... but on the other hand I'm sure their would be members that would do it normally like I'm sure there are for alternative titles.
Maybe you could also limit the number of bucks a day you can earn that way ? I don't know.... It is just an idea to encourage tagging which can be a bit tedious sometimes (I try to do a few when I browse...)
Well, if it shouldn't be bound to bucks (which I totally agree) maybe there's another way to encourage users to tag.
I read about a tag cloud in a different part of the forum. If you would combine this with a concept like trending topics known from twitter this could result in a unique feature for this site. Dynamic content related to the site provided by the users enabling all users to explore the site in an intuitive and appealing way is always a plus, isn't it? ;)
The user's focus for tagging would be different if there would be such a concept, I'd think.
By the way, speaking of focus - is there a way the input element for a new tag could get focus() after clicking the according link? Sometimes it's the little things... :)
I understand WTM is about the character, not the actor (forgot who said that to me here... :P) but anyway, we can't forget about these great actors ! I wondered if in a case like this, where the actor is really abvious in the shot, we would be allowed to tag it "jack nicholson" http://whatthemovie.com/shot/41181
That would not be good, it's a bit of a spoiler and who shall define the obviousness? Maybe you don't know him and then you can search the movie up. I think there is a lot actors that I find really obvious from the 40's and the 50's and those may not be obvious for all.
sorry Razzo thought you recognized it was jacky ;) but I understand your point... could have been nice to browse through all of his snapshots though...
In the beginning from WTM2.0 there were some users adding tags like this, it gave me some solves ('ah yes indeed, it was that actor, didnt recognize him!') and all tags were deleted when mentioned in the chat or on the forum (as should be).
Yet another small bug: the contests' shots don't appear if you search a tag. For example, searching for "monochrome", you don't get http://whatthemovie.com/shot/32686
