Was six days in Lyon last week, for the Institut Lumière’s festival. I've watched (or re-watched…) some movies…Some Visconti’s masterpieces first : « La Terra Trema » (1948) is an unclassifiable movie completly neorealist and played by the inhabitants of the fishermen’s village… very aesthetic and commited movie. « Morte a Venezia » (1971) a classic, but deffinitively not the best Visconti’s movie nevertheless Dirk Bogarde is very good and the photography is wonderfull. « Le notti bianche » (1957) is a masterpiece, very nice photography, Marcello Mastrionani and Maria Schell wonderfull, a very nice and touching story. Visconti at his best. « Lo straniero » (1967) is the adaptation of the eponymous novel of Albert Camus. It’s of course impossible to adapt this novel but Visconti’s movie is not so bad as some people say. Mastrioni is good and persuasive and the movie is faithfull to the book. The photography is very good too. And « La caduta degli dei » (1969) of course, one of the best known masterpiece of Visconti with « Il Gattopardo ». Then some movies of a forgotten french director Raymond Bernard. If the movies he directed afer WW2 can be forgotten, the others are true masterpieces. I watched four of them : « Le Joueur d’Echec » (1927) is a wonderfull adaptation of the Stephan Zweig novel. Great direction, wonderfull sequences... a pure forgotten gem of the silent era. « J’étais une aventurière » (1938) is a very funny comedy in a Lubitch’s style, les « Otages » (1939) is a bitter comedy that unfolds during WW1 and that was censored till end of WW2 and « Les croix de Bois » (1932) which is a wonderfull adaptation of the eponymous novel of Roland Dorgelès a very hard and moving movie on WW1 much better indeed than Hawk’s « Road to Glory » (1936) for example. A great director to (re-)discover. Then some movies of another great Director Frank Borzage « The Steet Angel » (1928) and « Lucky Star » (1929) two wonderfull melodramas with a wonderfull couple of actors Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell… Then many other movies like « Fingers » with an impressive Harvey Keitel and a very nice point of view on New York city. This one is much more deep an interesting than the french remake of it "De Battre mon coeur s'est arrêter". « The Heartbreack-Kid » (1972) of Elaine May (She worked with Nichols on « The Graduate ») is a nice comedy even if « Mikey and Nicky »(with Falk & Casavetes) is better. « Cisco Pike » (1972) of Bill Norton with Gene Hackman as a sick cop and introducing Kris Kristofferson as an ex-rock star who beame a dealer. Ted Post’s « Go Tell the Spartans » an underrated war movie on Viet-Nam with an excellent and cynical Burt Lancaster, « Rolling Thunder » by John Flynn a good « Death Wish »-like movie (the movie gave the name of the shoret-lived production society of Quantin Tarantino : RTP) with an impresssive William Davane. « Justin de Marseille » of Maurice Tourneur (1935) a very funny crime/comedy movie. « Lenny » (1974) of Bob Fosse with an excellent Dustin Hoffman and a wonderfull b&w photography of Bruce Surtees (« Outlaw Josy Walles », « Dirty harry » and much of Eastwood’s movie). Another masterpiece was Fritz Lang’s « Man Hunt » but everybody knows it…. The only deception was Fei Mu’s « Kong Fuzi » (« Confucius », 1940) a revived movie long considered as lost but it looks to me like a boring PRC product ?? Parhaps was I not receptive… A good week indeed...

    Enter the void
At last, what can I say, I'm still shocked, it will take me a long time to process this movie
Yes it is long, yes it is repetitive and exhausting, but who can deny the genius in this movie? it doesn't matter if you hate it or if you love it, the movie is so unic and so unbelievably well filmed, I dont think I have ever seen such amazing visually uplifting movie in my entire life, the last movie who can reach that level is 2001, and the comparaison you can read in the critics is justified!! Yet, it has of course nothing to do with 2001, only its visual power never EVER seen before on screen can be compared. It is revolutiary in many way, ambitious, controversial, desorienting but fascinating, long and irritating at time but necessary to bring you to that state of mind of ultimate bad trip. Everything in this movie is perfection: visuals, filming, narration, sound work...
At one point I looked around in the audience, I got fascinated to see the face expressions of people: some looked like they were having the trip of their life, some looked like they were about to run out of the cinema (yet noone left lol), one girl next to me was crying and shacking the all time, and another morron next to me was having uncontrollable laughs the all movie even during drama or sex scenes. Ok I watched it in Amsterdam and I suspect some people got a little bit "prepared" for the movie lol, that may explains ^^ but never I have seen an audience reacting so violently to a film before!
Thanks Gaspar Noe for so much talent, thanks for not making any consessions, thanks for not listening and not cutting any of those scenes, who cares if it's long, I wanted more! thanks for the most incredible experience I had on big screen
There is absolutelly no doubt in my mind that Enter the Void will become one of the greatest cult classics of all-time and I'm glad I got to see it in the cinema. Now waiting for the blueray with even more uncut credits :)
Gaspar Noe is by far the most inovative and talented director out there. I can't wait for the next one: a porn love story as he already announced ha ha ha but we will have to wait a looooong time.

The Social Network - I can't imagine how this could possibly be better, but it lies pretty far from my favorite subjects so 86/100.
Great cast, music, cinematography, sound, story but most of all - dialogues. Best movie of the year so far, but I suspect it won't hold that title for me long, I rated Inception slightly higher but whilst Nolan's movie spoke of some of my fav themes (hence the extra points) it wasn't as good as it could be, TSN is fantastic film and Fincher did everything right.

    The Devils from Ken Russell
I haven't watched much movies from Ken Russell, this is my third one after Altered States and Tommy which I both really liked. What an awesome movie again, very controversal (was banned in many countries), still today and rare to find, the only version on dvd existing which I got is unfortunately not the best quality (it is the same as the image below but although it says it is restored, it really doesn't look like it is at all) This film is screaming for getting the new quality reprint it deserves.
It's outrageous and very weird and at the same time so grotesque it's hilarious.
Russel depiction of religion, blasphemy, morals and corruption is like nothing I have ever seen before. Very powerful disturbing movie!

Let me in 90/100 - I'm shaking :D I was very sceptical about remake - not because I liked "Let the Right one in" much, it was a good movie, but I didn't understand what's so great about it - I simply thought it was unnecessary to make and some of the changes (Eli=-Abby) annoyed me. Oh God, I was so wrong. I wasn't scared for a minute in the original, during remake I actually had to cover my eyes and grab my chair. The movie is very suspensful and has a ton of spooky scenes, the story has a lot of great additions - there are two ways to interpret everything, the characters have more depth but the true winner is cinematography - simply stunning. I knew the story yet I couldn't take my eyes off screen. One of the best horror movies I've seen.

+ You Don't Know Jack (2010) : Too bad it's a TV movie because it would have been a sure Oscar nomination for Mr Al Pacino! He won the Emmy Award but that's just not the same^^ HBO's TV shows and movies are usually better quality than most movies relased in theaters. This one could have had at least 4-5 Oscar nods...
The casting is great (Pacino, Sarandon Goodman) the story is obviously awesome with such a hot topic. The movies doesn't tell you what to think, it gives you stuff to think about. Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam, Sleepers, Wag the Dog...) definitely knows how to shoot a movie!
--> 8/10 (but not on my top250 because it's a TV movie, like "An American Crime")

Mixed feelings for this one. In one side, the idea of using this theme in a movie is provocative and politically incorrect and I like that :) But on the other side, it could have been much funnier. A lot of the first degree humor felt flat for me, and I was expecting more sharp humor. Some of the dialogues are good though :)

Aliens, 60/100 - I'm stunned some people claim this is better than original movie. Oirginal is a masterpiece, wonderful horror film. This is mindless action with one dimensional characters, the last time I heard dialogues that bad and saw characters that badly written was "Avatar", way to go Cameron. Sigourney is awesome and there are some good scenes but overall it's a typical action movie, which actually tries to repeat the storyline from first movie only with much weaker characters and without great atmosphere. It's a good action movie, though.

    Visitor Q from Takashi Miike

ha ha ha I can't stop laughing, Takashi Miike is mad! The weirdest movie I have seen from him so far. Hilarious! And it goes a lot further than just the little crazy dark humor movie, it is in fact a provocative allegory about reality TV

"The key to the movie is, you are never allowed to know what you are supposed to feel. These days, in movies and TV, we are frequently "told" what to feel. Takashi Miike takes this and pulls the carpet from under all of us. he builds his film around the phenomenon of TV/media, emotion-building, exposing, exploiting... Yet keeps this tension through the movie and does not allow us for a moment to settle in our armchairs, does not for one moment let us get into that comfy zone of being told what to feel"

WARNING: do not watch it if you get easily disturbed because this one WILL disturb you ;)

Wicker Man 2006, 3/10 - I have huge admiration for pagan beliefs so it always pisses me off when they are depicted as evil forces as oppose to pure and good christianity (!!!!) but this is missing here as the entire meaning of the movie and its lead character were changed - this is the best unintentonal comedy I've seen in my life, Nicolas Cage reactions to his nightmares and the scenes where he is senselessly punching women in the face are hilarious. The film is a gigantic parody of itself, but trust me you will have great fun watching it. I haven't laughed like this for a while...
