Being a member of a group, I think it would be nice to make some kind of distinction between group solvers and solo solvers. It should be mentioned on the profile, with the possibility to add subprofiles of the members of the group. I am not suggesting to make two separate rankings, but an honorable mention for best solo solver and/or uploader would be a nice gesture. Solo solvers deserve some extra credit, because by god playing WTM takes a lot of time!
Well, as far as i know it's allowed to play with a whole group on one account and besides you can never check if people pass on solutions (for different accounts). But you're right the Hall of Fame is not really fair if you look at it this way.
I would think it would be more fun for all your friends to have seperate accounts, and then you can be competitive with each other. Thats what me and my friends do.
How about a seperate leaderboard for people who use automated scripts to cheat?
There used to be a famous game in France in the old times of the beginning of internet. It was called "jeu frcd". Some kind of paleolithic version of WTM (Mr Zob won it a couple of times). Each winner was supposed to organize the next session which was a few monthes long. Nothing more to win.
At the beginning, everybody was playing alone. Then, after a few years of existence, the first teams showed up. Of course they were outclassing the individual players. After a few more sessions, the individual players had completely disappeared.
Playing with a group can be fun, to just have a few beers, use a big screen/beamer and try to figure out which movies they are... but not in a competition form, just as a kind of social occasion... otherwise group playing sounds kinda boring to me. I admit I sometimes ask people for hints on difficult shots, but I don't consider that cheating...
playing with friends is fun, i think this is more about shared accounts... nothing you can do about it though.. but perhaps the option to see if a person is an individual or is part of a group of friends playing isn't a bad idea!
Talking about teams or scripts, I wonder how a single human can solve 336 shots in one hour (5.5 per mn). That's the current score of the best solver in the past hour in the Hall of Fame...
@pspan: why isn't it fairplay? You can compare it to pubquiz teams. Although exceptions exist, teams usually have an edge over the single player. The combined knowledge of a pubquiz team, in which each member has his own speciality, is larger. But it is still fairplay.(And pubquiz teams still can have an achilles heel, in our case the sports questions.) Should this stop single players from participating? Of course not! Some people like to play on their own, others like to play in a team with a shared account.
But I do think it is fair to give single players some kind of recognition for their efforts. As an incentive to keep playing and uploading and to prevent what efji mentioned about "jeu frcd".
Haha let's play together CW ! I wonder how many percent we can get... Maybe it's the same shots we can't solve so it'll be useless !
edit: actually I'd need a German/Dutch teammate ! I can't solve any German/Dutch movies except Fritz Lang's (and Lola rennt, Das Experiment, Der Untergang, Das Leben der Anderen, Goodbye Lenin etc.. the big German movies but otherwise I suck lol)
@theoffice911 I am Brazilian, if you want me... hahahaha
I swear I was surprised, indignant and outraged when I read this post first. I do think that this is not fairplay, I find unfair, I think the main purpose of playing time is to score more points, because you imagine what fun begins in trying to hit and all you know is already solved!
@pspan: I'm afraid it's not that simple. WTM even mentions it somewhere as a possibility to play with a shared account with some friends. So we do. Since october 2008. And we have been open about this since the beginning. And I'm sure we are not the only team. And teams do not always perform better than single players, because in that case LaDiDa should have been at the number one position since october 2008. I think the whole discussion needs to move beyond the fair/unfair level. The situation is like this: There are single players. There are teams. Period. You can't turn back time. How is WTM going to deal with this in a way that does justice to both sides?
I'm not in a team, but I still don't solve all my stills myself. When I'm at school class mates automatically look with me. Sometimes I have to ask friends what a movie was called (I watch many movies with friends and sometimes hope they remember the title) and I also like to discuss some shots with some IRL friends that also play whatthemovie.
I think many people also have family, friends or class mates that look with them, so it will never be really fair. Also, I do not really care for the Hall of Fame.
I think the biggest problem is the vault now. Won't be fair if a group of 15 people wins the most awesome uploads while a loner had only one solve less. But still, this is very hard, almost impossible, to inspect.
@ theoffice911: With on average 2 Dutch movies making it to FF each month, the Dutchies will be useless to you. Now, if I had a French teammate on the other hand... ;)
Sorry Ladida, I do not want to turn back time, and it is what it is. But I do not like to compete with 10 others. If you want a seperate team competition, OK with me.
it is a big difference between "a friend is in my house when i play to WTM and he help me a little" and "I want to make a team with french, german, american and asian specialists".
I like this game because there is nothing to win. Nothing ! Only glory... And, seriously, what the glory to be first with a team ?
But, I like also this movie because the rules are simple and very soft. I'm not a big fan of autority or repression so if people want to play in team, I'm OK, of course. But I really don't want an other HoF for team. It will be the end for single player, like in every Internet Game.
@the Office : I don't think we always find the same. I see a lot of comments by you with the mention "this shout contains spoiler".
Same opinion as CW. If some players want to tell the world they are playing in group, they can notice it in the "About you" part in their WTM's profile. It could be nice to have more informations about best solvers, but let's be careful about a WTMilitia about player's identity. Simple rules, nothing to win except uploads and gratitude from hundreds of other players, let's take it easy !
I also agree with CW. I understand teams with friends or colleagues, can be real fun (especially with the high amount of shots nowadays). Teams with people who met each other here would be insane, though.
what might be a idea for the long term development: groups which can be established by users and where users can join (like on last.fm) and these groups might have their own statistics and hall of fame. So everybody can play with their own account but the group also "benefits" from that.
As for the teams playing with one account now: I don't think that is really a big problem. I think most or all of them are playing in teams for the fun playing together and not to be on top of the hall of fame.
I don't mind group solvers. Anyway there are solo solvers way better than me. I play against my buddies and I keep trying reaching a given percentage of solved (33% is my personnal challenge).
Okey, top 10 should team up so all of them have 99% solved.
Nah, but seriously, if I play WTM at school there is no way of stopping people from watching and commenting the shots, and why would I? It's fun. And at home I get some help from my younger sister. But a team consisting of people who don't know eachother just to gain points seems kind of lame.
It was already explained in another topic for which reason the horsehead is given. It is only given to people who are cheating, with a script for instance, multiple accounts...
Its only natural. You start a thread about groups vs singles. People click on your name in the thread and see a horsehead, so they ask if you got it for being a team.
Well maybe it's my mistake, as them00ch said I clicked your name and saw your horsehead and was just curious about it. was not my intention to troll or to spam this thread. this case is closed for me. You can go back to the initial topic ;)
The teams are growing and multiplying, like a virus! Here's another time http://whatthemovie.com/user/forumquedizni ... There will be differences between sool and team solvers after the redesing?
Wow that last link definitly calls it for a solo vs team Hall of Fame, it's written "Estamos no nĂºmero 20", which means, "we made it to number 20"... "we"
