I was wondering if the notion of Genre could be introduced in future dev of the site... Maybe you already thought about it...

Let me explain: We could for example play in the Comedy section Drama section Classics section Cartoon section etc...
Of course it would give a hint on the genre of the film... but most of the time the picture speaks already for itself (Cartoons, Science Fictions, Horror...)

As I am concerned I never whatch Horror movies, they are just not my type of films, and it can get very frustrating when browsing to see all these snapshots with blood all over the place, in the eyes and all... therefore they could be in the Horror section ;)

    What do you think ?

Hope my idea won't make people scream :)

    Hi Cotp,

I think it might be too complicated and too many films have more than one genre (if not mutliple genre). The notion of genre itself is sometimes very difficult to define for some movies...
If you dont like horror shots just move on, like some of us dont like head shots or close up too much or disney animation (no i dont talk about my self, or maybe just a little bit :)), we are not gona ask a separate part only for head shots or disney.
Hope you get my point :)

    Thanks Chrisy for your anwser
I agree there are multiple genre to a shot, maybe we could all use then the TAG system, which already exist. When uploading, if one uses Cartoon (which is obious) or Horror (when it has some gore elements) maybe we could use it as some kind of filter.

    Again, just a suggestion.

This would be giving a hint. And hints are bad m'kay. I dont think defining sections of the site as genre specific is a good thing. Especially as a lot of the films posted are not genre-films.

edit: moved thread to proposals :P

Indeed a hint or in contrary the complete wrong idea on the movie
    For example: this shot http://whatthemovie.com/shot/27944
You might be tempted to put an horror tag, except the movie is not an horror movie, by far, it is just a drama.

them00ch, if I agree with you it would be giving a hint for comedy and drama movie I think it wouldn't if we tag "gore" a snapshot containing gore elements, or "cartoon" a snapshot wich is clearly from a cartoon or "black & white" a black and white snapshot...

My point is it could help users filter snapshots they don't like "gore" snapshots for me, cartoons for chrisy or even "boobs" for olympiquetango (http://forum.whatthemovie.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=538&page=1#Item_14)

But then I guess my topic shouldn't be about genre but more about classifying the snapshots so we could filter the ones we don't like.

You can already tag snapshot. Animation snapshots already are tagged as "animation", "anime" for most of them. But it is true at the moment it is not possible to exclude certain shots with a certain tag. I dont know if that would be possible, that is something Tliff and Naut would need to answer.
But again I think it would be quite confusing, there are plenty of non animation movie which have little animated parts, that doesn't mean they are animation and dont think they should be tagged animation either. Tags are also used for people to search certain movies, this would give them the wrong idea
This seems to me all very complicated when you can just, like all of us do already, ignore the ones you dont like :)

I still don't think it would work. To use olympiquetango as another example, say she has filtered out pictures of "nudity" or "boobs". And then someone posts a shot of the animation the little mermaid, when she gets her legs. That could be tagged as nudity. Or a shot of Venus in the awesome Gillam movie Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Great shot, would be missed.

I would wager that even though she said she didnt like pointless shots of boobs (which I would tend to agree with) she would still like certain shots if done artistically and tastefully, and those shots would be missed.

I think there is no-one on this site that would make a blanket statement of "I dont like X type of shots", because every now and again one would come along that changes their opinion, or is at least an exception to the rule.

Your best solution is one that is already available to you ------- Use the overview. You only see a thumbnail, and you can skim past any pictures you dont like. Simple.

Exactly, and it is also all very subjective, like you would tag this one horror http://whatthemovie.com/shot/36140 I wouldn't ;)

    point made by you two...

on my hand still think it would be a nice idea to be able to sort the snapshots... but that would require more use of the tag section during the upload phase... (like the tags we see on site like youtube) since I don't think that may shots are tagged.

When ones are tagged as for here "crowd" http://whatthemovie.com/search?t=tag&q=crowd we can't filter the ones in the archive between the one in the feature films section.

Would be nice to have a tag cloud as on this link http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/tags/ for now this gives a 500 error: http://whatthemovie.com/search?t=tag

Again I don't want you to think I am critizing anything or think I want to give you more work :\ just giving some feedback... hope you like it and don't get offended... if not well I'll just keep playing with my mouth shut ^^

I wouldn't tag http://whatthemovie.com/shot/36808 as an horror movie too, although I admit the shot is quite gore.

how did you get that error 500? the url is malformed, it has no query data...

e.g if i search for "snail porn" the url would be whatthemovie.com/search?t=tag&q=snail+porn

your url ends with just search?t=tag

where did you find that link?

I think Cotp means he would like to see all tags like here http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/tags/
So he just tried to have all tags by just trying an url which just says "tag" to see if it works
I dont think there is such thing at the moment but must be possible to do

Wouldn't it be nice to have some knid of sorting order possible, I mean only for shot in the archive... ?
Let's say a user decides like MrZob to choose shots he considers to be "The Magic of Production Design", and then he could present his gallerys to others :)
Could be nice to be able to create Hitchcock appereance etc... any kind of thematic sort that is not possible with Tags...

    What do you think ?

Well there is already the personal favourite gallery that anybody can browse. I think you want to turn your profile page in a personal wtmblog or something i'm not sure ^^

Genres and tags are so subjectives that it's hard to browse shots by tags, especially when tags are not automatically put on, most of the shots don't have tags. I personnally tag a shot when I don't want to bookmark it and be able to find it by the lounge system. It could be interesting to have categories for shots but i think that would change the game and i'm sure that's not what you want :)

There's a lot of shots I don't know or don't like but sometimes it's those that make you love the game too :p. http://whatthemovie.com/shot/33516 This shot for instance is from a specific genre but you wouldn't know it if you don't know the movie. Filters make you miss the fun of finding things you like where you wouldn't look for it. The Next button is filled with surprises :p
Good is fine, better doesn't always work for everyone. Sorry, it's late and i wrote too much :d

i think it could be great, i already made a reply about this in another topic, here's what i said again:

I think it would be really nice if there would be some more filter options, there's already the easy/medium/hard filter option and a tag filter option, but having some more could be fun (maybe only for the archive, cause they will give away information).
    For example:
    - a filter to make a selection of shots only from movies that you've seen (this should only be possible for archive shots).
    - a filter to make selections of shots from movies from a certain genre (it would be nice to make it possible to choose include or exclude for specific genre such that you can only include sci-fi shots for example or select everything but exclude horror, or make any possible combination you wish).
    - a filter to make a selection of shots from movies from certain countries (such that you can make an selection of only asian movies (or french, dutch or american or whatever possible combination (include and exclude again))).
    - a filter to make a selection with shots from movies from certain director and/or actors/actresses (include and exclude again and every possible combination)
    - a filter to make a selection with shots with a certain rating to (minimum 8 for example, this could be done with the rating you gave yourself, or the average rating shots have)
    - a possibility to filter all the awesome uploads (has been suggested before)
    - a filter to make a selection with all uploads from certain players (for example all your own, or a combination of certain players)

This could of course only be possible if certain tags are added for movies on the movie page (like genre, country, directors, actors etc).
And again, these options should be only possible for the archive. I think with this playing in the archive could get more fun, you could make your own quiz contest and play with friends a nice selection you make of certain shots.

I hope its all a bit clear and i realize this would be a lot of work and i certainly dont expect it to happen soon, but its just an idea that maybe could be nice for the future.

and of course you will miss shots when you use the filter options, but it has to be seen as something extra, you don't have to use the filter all the time. Just like now you can also filter easy shots, and you miss a lot of nice shots then, but this is no problem cause you've already seen them before, so you don't miss them.

I believe too that for the archives it would be really nice. Just by asking the uploader to put three tags or more and genres or different informations when uploading (which would be revealed only when the shot gets to the archives) it would facilitate the creation of such a system much more easier to enable.
