Hello everyone, since I'm quite new here, I wanted to have your feedback on what you consider the best way (if there is a best way) to play WTM considering the uploads. Let me explain:
Would you rather have people upload obvious but powerful screenshots from movies like these:
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40878
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/11944
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/36407
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/36486

Or to post some screenshots that has to make people think and remember the movie like these:
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40744
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40838
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40581

Of course the two way of playing are good but making my screenshots right now, I am really in front of a dillema...

Let me give you a last example:
if I were to post a screeshot on North by Northwest would you rather me posting this type:
    1) http://whatthemovie.com/shot/11572
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/1674
    or this type
    2) http://whatthemovie.com/shot/8828
    http://whatthemovie.com/shot/22307

Thanks in advance for your feedback, I would really appreciate it

Its your decision. Upload what shot you want.

Easy but awesome looking shots usually score higher. But puzzle type screenshots usually fare just as well. You decide, no-one can tell you what to post.

I just was wondering what type of shots you like the most ?

On my part I would say I like puzzle shots (like the apple http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40744 that had to made me think where the damn I had seen that apple !! :)) but I am afraid as you say that apple shots may not be well rated even though this apple got a 7.65 which is not bad for an apple :P

Ok then I guess I will have to continue doing it as we say in french "au feeling"
like this shot I posted wich is obvious for people who've seen the film http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40173
and this http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40668 which is not from a Blake Edwards movie :P

Yeah, there is no best way. Everyone likes different kinds of shots. Just make them look "awesome" and they have a good chance.

Cool, one of my uploads is in the "have to think about" section.
Personally, i don't really like face shots, or easy shots. But there are exceptions, like the first shot in Cotp's post.
There are some shots that may be easy, but (imo) belong on this site, including the first one.

When i upload shots, i just try to follow/keep in mind this post http://forum.whatthemovie.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=334&page=1#Item_15.
LePaposaure did a great job on defining a good shot in that topic.

Thanks for that link forerunner, i liked the ending by LePaposaure should be a motto:
"Awesome help to define the rate of a shot :
    - if you know the film : ask yourself if you want this shot to represent the film in the movie's page.
    - if you don't know the film : ask yourself if the shot is a good challenge to guess the movie or a good graphic example to give you the envy to watch the movie."

Just tried a puzzle shot http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40904 , thought it was interesting because I gave a big clue with what's on the tape (there were shots where we couldn't read anything)
    and I see after 13 votes it's already at 5.23 :(
What do you think ? If there is a problem with this type of shot, please tell me and I won't upload them or will try to do best next time !!

PS: if my shot gets rejected, am I allowed to upload it as Awesome Upload ?

Yeah thats ok. As long as the images dont break any rules like quality, TV movies, dupes, etc.. then you can use your awesome upload slots however you like.

    Thanks for that.

But why do you think my shot http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40904 is getting such low ratings ? Is is because users havn't seen the film or is my shot just not good and I just don't realize it ? If one tell me I can try to do best next time I upload... Sorry again if I get a bit frustrated by these ratings. I take time to go through a DVD and choose my snap so that it can offer a challenge for other users. Isn't that the point ?

Oh I guess as I said before I just could upload shots like these

and get high ratings but I don't see the point. (sorry for that last ironic comment, I love Kubrick by the way don't be scared m00ch :P)

    About your tape shot.
    1. It's not obvious at all. And for people who haven't seen the movie (and I suspect they are a lot), the only clue is that it's probably a french movie.
    2. And apart from that, it's a close up on a tape and a hand. Most of us probably don't find this "puzzling" at all. And the shot by itself doesn't look bad... but it doesn't look good either.
If I may suggest... You're new here, so don't expect to get most of your shots accepted, at the beginning. My advice is : watch, try and learn.
And when you're taking a snapshot, try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who hasn't seen the movie. Is it gonna be interesting/good-looking enough ? Or is it gonna be one of those "could be anything" shots ?

"But why do you think my shot ->link<- is getting such low ratings ?"

For a start its only had 17 votes, so it may well improve yet, too early to say. Early votes are not always indicative of the final score.

It's only got one solve out of those voters too, and unfortunately unknown shots tend to score lower. I dont want to get into a conversation about if this is right or wrong (its been discussed to death previously) but it is unfortunately a fact. People tend to vote images higher if they know it. Even the most unbiased fairest voters here are probably swayed by this psychological effect a degree too.

That being said, try not to fall in love with your own shots too much, it will only lead to dissapointment if the community as a whole does not vote according to your passion :) and don't get hung up on score, its not the be-all and end-all.

Just concentrate on making great shots. Try and take shots that would look good hanging on your wall somewhere, give people something interesting to look at, even if they don't know the film. [edit: what MrZ said much more succinctly above me]

Remember though, lots of shots fail to make it every day, even ones which a lot of people might say were good. They cant all be accepted. Just bear that in mind if any your images fails. We ALL have images we thought were good get rejected. As soon as you realise that it becomes a lot less stressful ;)

I'll try and do my best and try to keep a balance between famous and unknown movies, easy and difficult shots... in a way that's what I expect here, so that's what I'll try to do... :)

Thanks for taking the time on explaing all that to me MZ and m00ch. I guess you're right, and anyway there is nothing I can do about it... :)
