The new feature "show solution" is controversally discussed. The possibility to show the solution to movies after a time period of 14 days is not acclaimed by every user. I'll try to list the pro and contra arguments, and we let *you*, the whatthemovie crowd, decide whether to keep or remove this feature.
Arguments PRO show solution: > "Damn, this shot is so cool! So well composed! I haven't watched it, but I'd like to!" - Just come back in 14 days time and look the film up. > "I can't sleep, this shot is stealing my dreams, what the hell is this movie?" - As said above.
Arguments CONTRA show solution: > "I've watched this cool film with my friends and stumbled upon a scene posted at whatthemovie. Damn, I don't get any points for the hall of fame. Damn! Time already ran out.. - Pretty annoying > "I just stumbled over whatthemovie.com a few days ago, and realised I don't get any more points for over half of all movies" - You can still solve the movies, but you don't get credit in the hall of fame. > "I have to check the site every now and then, to be up to date with new movies. I could miss solving a movie, when I'm on holiday." - Don't bring your laptop if you're going on a diving tour. whatthemovie won't cover for loss.
So, enough said, please help us with your vote. You are also encouraged to discuss this topic right here. Tell us your thoughts!
i think the 2 weeks solution is a good one. some images made me really curious and i definetely want to see the movie. and i think discovering new (or old) movies is far more important than reaching some silly high score....i'm only saying this, because i didn't get in... so far. :-)
If you keep the time limit to solve a movie you should offer the solution after it expires (and *only* then). I'd only remove the solution button if you also remove the time limit.
kerrang, of course. "show solution" implicates the time limit and vice versa. No "show solution" - no more timelimits. But we will definitly keep the new "hall of fame last 2 weeks"
Really, how often will it happen for a person that they want to see a movie after one still? I'd say the solution option takes away the edge of the game. It would be a lot more exiting without it, even if its psychological.
one solution: (maybe I ignored some facts, but no one is perfekt ;)
when someone new creates an account at whatthemovie, his highscore will be calculated like this: 100 percent means: count of all movies - count of movies at the time of registration the 2weeks feature will be hold and you have to wait 2weeks, till your solutions will be presented in the hall of fame so no one can create an "few solution account" to get credit points on another account, or?
Why not allow the option show solution, but only with a maximum of 3 per day per ip-address and logged in user? and always give points to a solved image...
Keep the show solution option, but if you click you don't get any credits and you will not able to take a guess. Also remove the 14 day option it anoys the shit out of me.
The problem is for new users (like me). After registration the new user has only pictures of the last 2 weeks to solve. Very hard for Top Solvers in "all time". So, for the new user the only hope is the stress for still in the Top Solvers of the last 2 weeks. I don't see another solution. Keep the button and no time limit is not able.
I think the feature doesn't work. People might use a second account to get their names into the All Time Solvers Highscore, as mentioned before. I think siegi's is a good idea, though I believe the best would be to shut down the feature completely.
On the other hand, without a Show Solution feature, foruns may be created to report answers to the most difficult stills. But then that's internet.
I haven't used the 'show solution' button yet (I'm dreaming of a 100%, for my own stats of course ;) ) and I probably won't use it in the future, but as I do understand the people who want to know the solution for their own viewing purposes, I'd suggest to simply raise the 'show solution' time to 4 weeks, or 30 days or something like that. It doesn't really solve the solution for new members, but it does help all those who have been at this since the start, but don't have time to check the site out every day. It doesn't change *that* much, but it does pretty much cancel out the contra point: "I have to check the site every now and then, to be up to date with new movies. I could miss solving a movie, when I'm on holiday."
I know, I know, sometimes the curiosity is really killing me, but i do prefer without the solution.
My suggestion is to put some kind of tips system. We could see up to 3 tips and try to solve the movie. The tips could be given by the ones who added the movie, or made up by you. :) What do you think?
tips could also come from imdb.com via keywords. in our irc channel is a bot working with this system of quizzing
but thats somekind of additional feature i think, not really an alternative kind of solution for this problem we discuss here.
siegis idea of changing the counting system for the percentage is good but will only be acceptable, if you guys all decide to save the "show solution" feature. just as an advancement.
Well, I can understand why some people like it. Yet, I think it kinda sinks the game ; plus those who'll use it won't never now the greatest joy on earth (if they don't have a life, of course), when they see a movie and suddenly feel the urge to find back that damn picture :D
Well, if the actual core of the question is the time limit and not the solution button, I'd ditch the time limit completely. In this case also the button would have to go of course. Solution button + no time limit would only encourage cheating.
Do whatever makes the most money. I love the site and want you guys to keep it around.
I'm assume this would mean keeping the show solution. It puts a "ticking clock" on users to return to the site frequently, increases page views as users return to previous pages to view solutions, and prevents you guys from having to deal with cheating in the long run. I'd change the hall of fame to a more advanced algorithm that weighed % heavily, but still gave weight to a high number of solved.
BTW you guys should get a better ad network than google ads. They don't pay shit.
we only came up with the time limit, because we didn't want the hall of fame to blow up, when introducing the "show solution" button. The only way of a co-existance of the button and the hall of fame is the limit of time. (Because people will always create cheat accounts to push ther *real* account.) The 30 day limit btw, is a good idea!
- remove the timelimit (now you can "show solution" everytime) - if someone has seen the solution remove the input-box (you can solve the movie never again) - block his ip-adress for this movie (if he uses a 2nd account => it doesnt work. he first hast to reconnect... and doing this for all movies is a barrier)
I play because of fun (and I guess because I have too much free time ^^), not because of a highscore. Seeing the green 'you solved it' is reward enough for me.
Whoever wants to storm the highscore should do this within the timelimit ;)
Well, I agree with a lot of you, showing solution involves time limit and vice versa. As far as I'm concerned, i never use "show solution", first because I see a lot of movies every week, and the challenge for me is : FIND' EM ALL ! ^^
Removing the "show solution" button (along with the time limit) is not a problem, but by removing it, you're forced to find an other way of ranking (the first hundred, or whatever).
I just voted for remove the show solution button, I have a few reasons :
The first is just a personnal reason because I don't get the point to show the name of a movie if for instance, I don't remember its title, I will probably remember it in a few. If I really don't know the movie, I just try another one, and maybe the next movie I'll watch will remind me a picture I've seen here, it happened to me at least 2 times since I saw all pics and watch some movies :)
I know you can tell if you don't want to know the movie then don't press button but here's the second reason which made me decide what to vote :
Its already mentionned here, for people who cheats because everytime there's a leaderboard, there will be people to be in by all the ways instead of just playing. But there's another way if you don't want to remove this button, you can also diseable points for movies that have been post with more than 2 weeks, so the ones where show solution button is on, and then no more problems ;)
The feature is nice for frames that you'll never solve, but it's a shame points earned for films during the two weeks are removed from your point totals that determine high scores when those solutions become available. I understand it keeps the game competitive for newcomers, but if the game could 1) track total correct 2) correct in last two weeks and 3) total correct for high score (all answered before 'show solution' becomes available), that seems to achieve competitiveness at all levels.
not much left to contributed. I'm pro solution button because it's a feature that allows you to get to know interesting movies (it happens, even to me, even after one sill). And yes, I'll watch them, when I finally get to know the title. So I like the solution button. On the other hand, I understand that there are people that play for the sake of winning the top score (whatsoever). And of course there are cheaters out there and they will do everything to get »on top«. Hence the two week top list is the only valid measure (fake account, spoofing etc. - all said above). Shortly, if you want both (and I do) a time limit is in my opinion the only solution. Please keep it that way! If you like you can fiddle around with the time span... to adjust the new reader|regular customer chances :)
We should also start thinking about the stupid group accounts. These are accounts that are used by more than one person and together they solve a lot more movies, of course. This destroys the whole Hall of Fame thing.
Deviant: This will always be the case, and we can't do anything against it. That's the internet, as above said. You could always meet with some friends, have a few beers and solve movies together. We have no problem with that..
We could make a "second" hall of fame, in particular for groups of solvers. But that would again only work with honest people.
i dunno... on one side, you can't see all the movies, which the people here posted so it's good, when you can hit the button and look for the name of the movie. on the other side, it's no fun to "cheat" and hit the button for schowing the result. you throw away one point for the highscore. but in the end of thinking, i agree with tollhouse! keep it the way it is!
I guess a fair all-time hall of fame for both old and new users is impossible. If you disable the show solution button and count solving old movies for highscore (like it was before), those who already used the button have a big advantage, because they either typed in the solution after they saw it or at least remember it.
My suggestion: Raise the time limit to 30 days and keep the rest as it is. :-)
I'm one of the "cool shot - i wanna see this movie" fraction. i bookmarked already several shots - and i want to know the title of the missing ones. why so serious about silly points? i wanna have fun and i want to know the solution of an riddle i can't solve. And i also think that 14 days of waiting are to long...
New idea: put 10 or 20 new ones every day and keep a history of "winners of the week". That way everybody has a fair shot at the high score every week.
Definitely for the "Show Solution" feature, if only because some of them make me go crazy, and I just wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise. But please fix the bug that allows you to just refresh the page and enter the solution again to win credit.
hello. i don't care so much about winning or being the best one on the site, having more points and being high on "hall of fame" the list. i like to solve even the movies that i can easily check by clicking on "show solution", for the fun of it. so being troubled over what movie is the frame taken from can be sorta bad for my health, while i'm not concerned about earning a point so much. my favorite feature here is that i can add a frame myself and make riddles of various difficulty. i wish i had more movies at home.
for me discovering new movies makes the show solution button too crucial for it to be removed. i love the competitive nature to this site, and like the idea of the hall of fame, but its true that it is impossible to make the hall truly fair. even though the button/time limits contributed to me losing credit for most of my solutions, i still believe that the current system is the best way to handle things. the only hang up i have is that there is just no way to catch up to the all-timers' totals. which is not that big a deal when you consider all the ways to enjoy this site
How about not having a solution button with a timer on it, but simply display the button only when you've already effectively solved the movie. Since there are so many movies on here already. When I want to look back at one of the solutions I've already found (but may have forgotten). I don't want to do the guessing work or the research work again.
So simply no solution button, but a "remind-me-what-movie-it-really-was-so-I-can-know-it-again-now,-possibly-to-rent-the-movie-in-a-shop"-button when you've already solved it.
yeah, right! The original idea behind not showing the title but a white bar saying "you solved this one" was: We didn't want to spoil the name of the movie if you are browsing the library with your friends.
But a show solution button, if you've already solved the movie is a good feature.
