Just a little question: should we name all the shots we replaced or only the ones, which were listed above to be replaced? I'm asking, because I just replaced another shot from The Machinist http://whatthemovie.com/shot/6717 (not the one mentioned above).
You don't have to put them here, but I think it's really nice to see all the improvements :) I replaced http://whatthemovie.com/shot/2647 but forgot to save the old link first :p
@nutria You don't really need to name them at all. It's just a little exercise at the moment while the process is new, and we are working through Asmodai's list. Interesting to see just how much difference it is making too.
Doing this has made me realise there are a lot of shots which look ok at first glance, but when you compare them you realise there is quite a difference between passable quality, and DVD quality.
Mikebozzio: I just checked FMJ and only found one shot (http://whatthemovie.com/shot/448) that needed to be replaced. That movie has been brought out in two different ratio's, though, but both are good.
mmm sorry MisterZob but I dont fully agree with replacing dvd shots with Blu-ray... In that case we are taking it one step further, this is only to replace bad quality non dvd shots
@Chrisy I don't understand what's wrong with that. There's already lots of Blu-ray shots on WTM. And I don't understand why you would like the shot to look better... but not too much. The main problem with those shots above is that they were from a heavily cropped source. I could have used shots from OAR DVD instead (I own them too). But why would I use an intermediate quality if I can have the best available today ? I'm not talking about updating all DVD shots into Blu-ray shots, that would be silly. I'm just saying : if I update a low quality / distorted / cropped / non DVD shot, why not making it look as good as possible ? Actually, if I hadn't written down those replacement shot were from Blu-ray, would you have noticed ?
@Chrisy : in the other thread you said "you can also take into account the wrong aspect ratio yes " Misterzob has basically done that :) with the added bonus that they are also better quality.
hey guys, great to see so many improvements. There is one thing that kind of bothers me though. If you look at this thread, it's a huge spoiler collection. I know these are all still out of the archive and you can request a solution anytime, but if you just post the old and new stills without the movie name, that way people who haven't solved the still can still get the kick of finally solving stills you have been pondering about for a year. I hope my point is clear. aside from that, i have one question. I uploaded a replacement still myself, but do the stills automaticly go through, or does a moderator check the "improvement?"
@forerunner From the other thread : "Once an image is replaced, your new image will be visible immediately, although they are also put in a queue for a moderator to check."
@forerunner It's no more of a spoiler than looking at any movie page and seeing all the archive shots. I won't add any more titles if you feel it's important.
I thought the meaning of this feature was to replace bad qualtiy shots or black bars shots etc.
but is it also the meaning to replace dvd shots with bluray shots, do we really need to do this?
If someone would like to replace one of my DVD shots(I don't mean my bad quality shots in the beginning of WTM) I would prefer first to get some warning in a shout like "He LordMyst can I replace #.... "
I didn't realize the first one was cropped and wrong aspect ratio, sorry about that, should have read and look better (as usual ^^) But when it comes to blueray, I still think this shouldn't be done if it is the only reason for the replacement. This replacement thingy is supposed to be to replace shots that are wrong: wrong aspect ratio, bad quality. But replacing a totally normal dvd shot with its blueray version is not fair imo, even if the first uploader doesn't lose any credit. As Lordmyst said, if someone decide to replace one of my less good quality shot from the beginning of WTM, I will be perfectly happy, as this is fair, didnt come from dvd, should look different... But if someone replace a totally good shot with blueray, I will not find it fair at all
and I also agree with Lordmyst, it would be nice if the first uploader gets notified as well when one of his/her shot has been replaced. An automatic notification would be great.
LordMyst, perfectly fine DVD-shots are NOT going to be replaced by bluray. That first con-air shot was not really dvd-quality, it's full of fuzzyness on my screen...
Or maybe for now as politeness just leaving a shout directly in the shot with reason of replacement, this should be enough, the uploader will be notified of the shout
Maybe there has to be a checking? For example, someone replaces a shot, and then a moderator first has to accept it. Otherwise a fairly good shot gets replaced with a very good shot. It makes WTM better, but to others it would seem the first uploader has uploaded a bad-quality shot. While that wasn't the case at all.
If people are kind they can replace this http://whatthemovie.com/shot/29720 from Saving Private Ryan, it's bad quality and I uploaded it (shame on me :P)
What's all this fuss about ? Who said any DVD shot would be replaced with its Blu-ray version ? I just wanted to make it clear that we should be able to use Blu-ray shots to update shots that need to be replaced in the first place (because they are either distorted, not from DVD, low quality, cropped, ...).
yes Misterzob, it was my fault I didn't look good ;) But in any case, this had to be mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if some people get tempted to replace a normal shot with blueray just because it looks better
maybe i'm to stupid xD but how do i replace a shot? do i need to post it here and somebody does it for me? in case i would like to replace one it would be nice to get a upload mode for it where you type in the number of the shot and replace it with the new one, an automatic request for the first uploader could be also implemented that way :)
Well apparently there is a new option on the Upload page, but you and me we can't see it because it is restricted to rank 9 and above. So if you want a shot updated, post it here and the others will do it.
* Replacement Upload If you want to replace a poor quality snapshot with one of a better quality choose this option. You see this option because your are a Cinematographer or higher.
