Just an idea, but it might would be a little be to much: why don't offer the possibility to tags shots as bad quality, make a special area where these shots are shown and people with the required rank could see them and update these shots.
Also shots in the archive could be protected from deletion, because it wouldn't be necessary anymore to delete bad quality shots.
great ideas holynoise I also think the votes for deletion shouldn't be possible in the archive. Now with this new system, it shouldn't be needed anymore except on rare occasions for late found dupes for instance and in these case a moderator can be notified and delete the shot.
Since I started browsing the Archive in search for shots that need to be updated, I've been finding A LOT of promo stills (which are not allowed, since they are not from DVD). I tried to update some... but it's actually rather difficult, sometimes impossible, to get a similar shot. Because those shots were actually taken by some photographer, on the set, during the shooting of the movie. And sometimes they actually show some part of a sequence that didn't end up in final cut of the movie. For instance, I couldn't get a "close enough" DVD shot for those promo stills : Serenity http://whatthemovie.com/shot/1213 ***DONE*** The Brothers Bloom http://whatthemovie.com/shot/40502 So what should we do ? IMHO, if we can't update it in a DVD shot, I think they should be deleted. Eventually, somebody will upload a real DVD shot from the same sequence.
@MisterZob. If it is completely unreplaceable and there is no shot even similar, I dont see a problem in voting for deletion. We shouldn't have promo stills in the DB. Perhaps post the link in this thread and we can get them blasted quickly.
If you can get one "close enough" then replace it. I have replaced a couple of promo stills:
for example:
In fact if you go through all of thYp 's uploads they are almost all promo, I have replaced loads already :)
Yeah LM, that's what MrZ is saying. It is a promo shot and not in the film. If there is one that is "good enough" then you can replace it (see my post above) . If there isn't even a similar one then may as well vote for deletion.
I made a replacement shot for Serenity. I'll upload it and let you Mods decide if we should go for this update or just blast the shot. LordMyst, I can't tell you the timecode for this sequence, my disc is already back on the shelf. It's around the first third of the movie.
OK, this Devil's Rejects shot should be deleted : http://whatthemovie.com/shot/487 It's a promo still. And there's actually no scene in the movie with Captain Spaulding having both his clown make up on and blood on his hands.
this is the closest I got the exact shot doesn't exist in my opinion, I could be wrong so is this one oke to update? http://whatthemovie.com/shot/167 Jin Roh
Since this list was going to get to my shots someday, I decided to come clean: I had two shots that weren't from the original DVD. I replaced one of them myself, since I recently bought the DVD. http://whatthemovie.com/shot/21669
Sorry, to say that Asmodai, but right now I'm pissed off about deleting that shot of mine without any considerations. Of course it wasn't from DVD and therefore against the rules. However, it was part of the first series ever posted on WTM which is now partly ruined. Second, it was already discussed here back in 2008 ( http://forum.whatthemovie.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=56&page=1#Item_6 ), with the conclusion to let the series undeleted. Third, LordMyst had a fine replacement shot ready. Even if there is a name in the shot (which isn't against any rule btw), it would have been a better solution than to delete the shot nonchalantly. I think this replacement thing is a slippery slope. Uploaders usually are attached to their shots (at least I am). So one should always consider the benefits and the costs. For example, I don't think it was necessary to replace the Big Lebowski shot and the Millers Crossing Shot as seen above. The quality was not that bad in the original. Those small improvements go along with probable irritation of the uploaders. I think in such cases the nice way is indeed as proposed by LordMyst to ask the uploaders if they are fine with the replacement (at least if they are still active). Don't get me wrong, I don't expect a special treatment. But I think LordMyst's shot was a valuable alternative, and it wasn't necessary to do it the harsh way.
I have to back Asmodai up on this one, he spoke to me in IRC about it and I also agreed it should be blasted. Obviously we weren't aware it was 1) part of a series 2) already agreed earlier to keep it even though it was half a shot :)
The shot is back, LordMyst if you would be so kind as to replace it with your shot, it would be grand. Fungus - apologies, we are just in a "clean up" mood and we made an error on this one, we are human :)
I actually agree the Big Lebowski one didn't need replacing. But the miller's crossing one I do, if only for the black bars removal. I understand people get attached to their shots, but if we can replace it with the exact same shot, but with improvements, then it can only be seen as a positive thing for the site and it's users. The shot still "belongs" to the user who uploads it, and in most cases I would be willing to bet most users would just think "wow I didnt remember that xvid/google image being such good quality!" ;)
Remember there is no reward for updating shots other than for the good of the site :) nobody does it for personal benefit or glory.
Hi everyone. I'm afraid I'm not gonna be able to help for a while as I am currently away from home and then don't have my movies with me. But I see you still doing a good job here :)
@fungus: I didn't change the "The Big Lebowski" shot just asked if I should. I will go change the Little Miss Sunshine later... Edit: Little Miss Sunshine changed
