I've always wondered what the criteria of the "moderators" are either to verify or not verify snapshots.

There were several occasions were perfectly good shots weren't accepted, yet an hour later I see 10 promotion shots all upped from the same guy right at the end of the line.

You need some more competence in there, for sure.

I mean look at this: http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/1123

There isn't a scene in that movie even close to that shot. It's mighty frustrating if you carefully choose what to snap to upload and it doesn't get verified but the bullshit gets through.

    thanks for your post DerHexer.

Shot #1123 dates back to a time, where we allowed promotional shots.
I've just disabled the movie (here is the url again: http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movie_stills/a3e59466544069cd660ee6a4595b0350.jpg)

We would be glad, if you guys report movies, which violate against the rules (e.g. promotional shots) so we can disable them.
Unfortunatly, we don't have the time, to skim through the past 1000 movies to look for bogus movies.

And to comment your disconcern about the "moderators": We get a lot of movies every day and try to post as many as we can. You are right about the fact, that we need more competence in the moderators team. A team of 10+ people who decide about the movies, which get posted or not would be great. But we have to do the backend programming for this feature first. We are still beta and constantly evolving.

My suggestion for now: Save your pictures, which were rejected and try uploading them at a later time :)

DerHexer: Thanks again for posting this movies here. Unfortunatly, we only have a chance to track down promotional shots if a lot of people report them.
Sadly, this button is sparly used..

The problem with promotional shots: We can't google every film, and we don't have your talent to recognize a promtional shot on sight :/
I hope a team of moderators, who look over movie snapshots, before they are posted will help.

    PS:
I disabled all shots you posted.

What about stills where the aspect ratio is not correct? I understand some users may have a fullscreen (4:3) version of the movie but I suggest that it should not be allowed to upload such "cropped" stills.

    A few examples:
    http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/2811 (should be 1.85:1)
    http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/2846 (should be 2.35:1)
    http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/2854 (should be 1.85:1)
    http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/3144 (should be 1.85:1)
    http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/3351 (should be 1.85:1)

Depends on your edition 'in the USA, you often have the choice between 16/9 & 4/3. Don't even know why the bother to change the ration.
In France, if the editor decides to crop or whatever, well, you just don't have a choice. 99.9% of the buyer don't know / care, so I guess they don't give a damn.
You have the format you have, that's it. I don't think it's that much of an issue (a shame, but the editors are to blame).

    Starvey,

First of all, fullscreen versions are an offense to the filmmakers and a website dedicated to film lovers should not encourage the usage of these versions.
Secondly, I remember the films the way they really are, and the aspect ratio and the framings are an important part of that.

I know that fullscreen versions are available on DVD or shown on TV and that some users buy them. But it should not be allowed to upload these maltreaded pictures. If not, what stops you to crop the picture to any other arbitrary part and upload it? That would be almost the same.

In <http://whatthemovie.com/beta/movies/view/2846> almost half the picture is missing!

I agree ; fullscreen (well, unless the movie is that ration, like 1933 King Kong, of course) is something I never manage to understand. Like cuts, censorship and cheddar :D

I remember a movie, when I was way younger, where two people were facing and talking to each other ; due to the TV stuff, it was fullscreen. At some point, you could hear the voices and see two noses :D

    biglebowski: interesting point!
Thanks for all your research work on the aspect ratio ;)

I agree with you that the aspect ration is a crucial element in filmmaking. In our rules it already suggests to use the original DVD to capture movie stills and not a TV recording. Lately, a lot of people seem to do exactly that :/

Maybe we should make this suggestion mandatory, accepting only snapshots of the DVD (Which most of the time is the original cinema version).

    @naut

    Thanks for listening! :-)

Yes please make the DVD source mandatory (or BD for that matter ;-). And please point out that the widescreen version should be used, not the fullscreen version. Exceptions are early classics of course.

And by the way, I agree with biglebowsky about using the widescreen versions only. Sometimes the right fomat even helps to guess the right movie. For example: Crop an image from “Twister” and it almost looks like “The wizard of Oz”. :-)

There are some other stills, too, that remind me of snapshots posted a few weeks ago – unfortunately I don't know when exactly and the database has grown so much I don't feel up to flipping through all of them … :-)

At least there's one advantage of reading forum posts :D , nice treat!

P.S: Don't you guys have a list with all stills so you could sort them after their title and check?
