I just deployed my first fixes and changes on WTM and here is a summary (nothing fancy) :
- fixed awesome button showing solved shots when a tag is specify (even if "include solved shots" was unchecked) - fixed awesome button showing our own shots (except if a tag is specify and you check include solved shots) - fixed AUs always having a "hard" difficulty and then cannot be seen with the random button if easy/medium difficulty is checked - fixed Scruffy shouts don't appear in your home page - fixed a LOT of errors 500 in favmovies, favcharacters, search (not all), login, register, logout, accept friends... - removed "about" when its hours ago (and added "ago" in last recent visits", don't important) - added pagination to the user search & the tag search. Now you don't have to wait forever if you want to search shots with the tag "animation", it's paginate. See : http://whatthemovie.com/search?t=tag&q=animation - User search is working like the movie search, if one result, it goes directly to the profile - Admins & Mods shouts can't be deleted from now on your profile, unless It's Scruffy. There were too many people who deleted our shouts when we warn them - Mentions in spoiler, other profile, contest page, movie page, review, are now handled in your home page and the # of Tales should be correct now - Fixed "NaN" showing when an user doesn't have upload with favs - Favmovies now choose the best rating shot in the DB not deleted and with AT LEAST 10 votes. If no one can be found, it takes the first not deleted (like before), and if there is no shot at all in the DB, a "no shot" image will appear on your favmovies page to handle the previous error 500 which was caused by a movie with no shots at all. - User will be redirected to his rejected shots when he deletes one of them instead of a random shot. That was boring when you wanted to delete more than one shot at the same time, you needed to go back to the settings etc, now if you delete your own shot in the rejected shots section, you will be redirected there after deleting - You can now login by pressing the "Enter" key in the password input instead of having to click to login everytime - If a movie doesn't have archive shots BUT has title/end shot, they will appear on the movie page index and they are now counted in the "snapshots total" link. See : http://whatthemovie.com/movie/beowulf_grendel - fixed Friendships go wrong when somebody (hey Pala!) wants his account back, it was because only friend requests sent were deleted when somebody deletes his account and not the "received" one also - fixed wrong "days left" for WTM supporters, now you should have the correct number of days left before your subscription expires - New page for movies with no title shot (just better look and correct URLs) : http://whatthemovie.com/page/titles - Fixed your total solves number. Before, that was including archive shots where you requested the solution. Bad! - Fixed friendship does not work when you try to accept one from an user with a "." in his username - Deleted a LOT of duplicate movies or invisible dupes (movies sharing the same url) or foreign movies with weird urls - some text fixes here and here - Added a lock function for movies. I have already locked 129 movies. From now, you will see a lock image on the movie page if the movie is a short, or a tv movie, or a porn/racist movie etc and you won't be able to upload shots from these movies. See :
If you see any movie on WTM which is not locked and should be, please leave a shout on my profile about it and i'll add it to the locked movies.
Of course new fixes add new bugs so if you see new bugs, please tell me, but no requests for BIG features!
I have also to warn you, i added (and will add in a near future) a lot of features for the mods to see who is lowering every shot, who is changing his votes to make their shots go to the FF or to be a SOTD, who is voting every time 10 to a friend and who is not active a lot on the website, who has multi-accounts/same IP etc... So be careful, there gonna be more bans because mods can see a lot of things now. Be fair and remember, be original, if you want us to approve your shots, take movies with less than 10 uploads for example! We're actually talking about blocking for a long period (more than the actual seven-days blocking) movies with a lot of shots in the DB.
What i'm working on :
- new bugs and old bugs which are killing me (hello Vito) - Supporter stats getting stuck randomly - navigation with narrow keys in FF/archive - add new covers for new movies - Something about snapshot of the month/year - New memorabilia for people who are contributing a lot (trailers, characters shot, end/title shots, alternative titles, abstracts etc) - New Hall of fame with the return of Top Solvers All Of Time in parallel, Top Uploaders last month, Top Contest Solvers, Top Users by Bucks, Top First Solvers etc.. I have a lot of ideas, if you have some, tell me, i haven't decided yet - Replacement allowed for character shots/titles shots and gain of time when uploading a character shot (activate the character, go to the upload page etc, too long!) - Change password procedure - A lock function for movies released in Theatres but unreleased YET on DVD/Blu-ray with a auto-unlock thing when the release date comes - Shouting ban - Buy AUs with your bucks (we need to talk about a lot of conditions for this one but we love the idea) - More interaction with the outside (facebook/twitter), mobile version... - Flag edit for movies - And a lot of moderation stuff (SOTD moderation, tab in your profile with a lot of informations about you, your guesses, your votes, your average vote etc)
The website can be a little laggy now, but after browsing some shots and some profiles, it should be fine.
Great work. :) Especially to see spoilered comments on your own shots on your homepage again is a great thing.
I also got a little request: If you create a new movie page and directly want to upload a shot for this film you always have to enter the captcha phrase even though it's obvious that there can't be any snap of this film in the ff/ns (since you just created the database entry). So couldn't you just skip the captcha in case someone created a new movie entry? It's a bit annoying for people who frequently add new movies to the database. ;)
BTW, I have a small request to ask, if possible: sometimes I found movies added to the db with the correct original non-english title only but with the wrong flag (usually the standard english one). I can edit info (abstract, title, year, IMDb link) but not the original language/flag related. I know that I can add alternative titles, but sometimes this is not possible because it's the only title available, but I think it's also a matter of accuracy...
I think favmovies should only choose from the shots in the archive (or closed vault contests maybe). If the best rated shot from a movie is still in the FF or the NS it could out now still be displayed on the favmovies, what could give away the solution to this shot.
i dont want vault shots in the favmovies, see pulp fiction actually, if you have it in your favs, its a draw shot, i don't want that. So i'm gonna change it to don't take best rating shots from contests. Also, i'm gonna remove taking favmovies shots from NS but i'll leave the FF shots. Need too many coincidences (best shot, movie with no shots..) to be the best rating shot anyway. Let's see how is going and if it's not working, i'll take only archives shots/characters shots/titles shots/timed out shots
yep, i understand your point don't worry, i'm just gonna remove shots from NS and see how it works with FF & others shots. But, with your example, this movie has only one lover and it's not the user who uploaded the shot (its you) so if you reeeeally want to find the solution, i don't know how players can find it since there is no connection between you and the movie, you don't have it in your favs, so players who go to your profile won't see it. That + the shot has to be the highest shot, i think it's ok.. (at least for now)
I also think we should not include FF shots, many coincidences but still, that's already the reason why they dont show in the movie page at all, until they reach the archive so I dont see why they would also show in this case ;) I have quite a lot of not so known movies that I favorite, and because I'm the only one to post shots from it, it would be very easy for people to just come to my profile to check :) or maybe I'm not understanding this right? Anyway, FF and new submissions should simply not appear anywhere where it is possible to get solution
You're doing an awesome job kinoute! Many great fixes already and the ones planned are very nice too :)
I do have another request: Would it be possible if a shot gets deleted (in FF) to check the next and previous shot and connect these with their '< previous'- and 'next >'-buttons? If the next shot used to be a now deleted shot, you will get redirected to a random shot, which can be very annoying if you're walking through the FF that way. (or has it been fixed already? last time I had it is quite some time ago)
Yeah there is a problem with this but i haven't fix it yet. It happens clearly when we make a sidequest and a lot of shots are being moved
To the others : That was exactly the same thing before. Before my changes, the favmovies took the first not deleted shot, so if it was a new movie with no shot, and you upload the first one shot, famovies would have chosen the NS soon-to-be-FF-archives shot to display on your profile. But i'll remove FF so...
But I have some comments "- Favmovies now choose the best rating shot in the DB not deleted and with AT LEAST 10 votes. If no one can be found, it takes the first not deleted (like before), and if there is no shot at all in the DB, a "no shot" image will appear on your favmovies page to handle the previous error 500 which was caused by a movie with no shots at all." I think 10 votes is to small a number. 25 would be a fairer number. The reason being the that awesome uploads get to high a rating imo. Whether this is because only fanboys vote for the screenshot I can't say, but I have seen awesome uploads with 11 votes and a rating of 9.5 and I think a regular uploaded shot with 45 votes and a rating of 8.25 should take preference.
"* crosbow * CommentTime3 days ago When upload a shot and he is in NS now, so one does only find out after the whole process, instead of into the begin? " I think was he/she means is, that when uploading a shot, why not check the eligibility of shotuploading before the Captcha check rather than after. And I agree. It's a little annoying to have to guess what the Captcha is spelling, only to find out, that there allready is a shot in FF/NS.
We can't change the number of votes needed, at first i wanted to put only five votes, but that was too messy with characters shots. We can't because the half of the snapshots which are actually on WTM are from the old version and there was no voting system at this time so the shots have like 5 or 10 votes only. If i put the number of needed votes too high, we're gonna miss like 50% of the shots
About the captcha, think about it, if its here, its not for nothing, its to prevent malpractice, people who are gonna flood a movie until they find a slot, spam bots making a mess etc. The thing i can do, it's add the time left before you can actually have a slot for a movie instead of the normal text "sorry there is already a shot in NS/FF, wait 7 days blabla".
And come on, that's two words, in two seconds it's done
The main thing is about the captcha, is to avoid people writing scripts that try the whole imdb library in the uploading step, so you get a nice list of which movies already have a shot in last 7 days/ns, which you can nicely start filling in.
kinoute: your suggestion would give people the exact time where the previous shot is, giving them almost a free solve :P
@kinoute - I don't want to delete the captcha step. Just switch it with the check step, so that the seqence becomes 1. Start 2. Choose 3. Check 4. Captcha 5. Upload 6. Verify
@Asmodai - I can't believe anyone would do that (Make a script), to be allowed to upload. So that argument I can't see as a valid point. If anything they would make a script to guess a movie, and I don't think anyone does that.
@Solhanne trust me, you're wrong about people making scripts. We have informations about guesses on shots and we had by the past some users with scripts answering automatically by parsing the tags of the shot.
So i won't be surprised if the captcha won't be there to see players using scripts to determine in a pretty little interval if a slot is free for a movie to be the first one to upload (for movies which the DVD is out today for example).
Yes, people have also used scripts for solving shots directly, but this takes quite a lot of effort, since you'd have to let the script try every possible solution on each shot. If you just check if the movie has an open slot once, that saves you a huge amount of bandwith and time.
- added vault shots to the "snapshot total" number on movie page - added flag edit for movies for mods & users who can edit abstract & movie info on movie page - fixed the green bars in overview for some users - fixed FF & NS taken for favmovies - removed vault shots for favmovies - fixed some redirection problems - fixed a lot of french movies URLs with accents - fixed some search queries error 500 - fixed again some bugs for users with a "." - added a little text on the movie page ("info" tab) when a movie is locked, just in case people don't understand the lock image (see : http://whatthemovie.com/movie/un_chien_andalou/info ) - added a page with all the locked movies : http://www.whatthemovie.com/page/locked - added a cancel pending friend requests button
excellent work again, kinoute ! Thank you very much :)
I got another suggestion which at least in my opinion could be improved.
I don't know if I am the only one here or how the other users think about it, but I find this "You posted this snapshot"-bar on every of our shots extremely annoying.
It makes small shots which are 720 x 300 even look smaller. Plus it doesn't really add any advantage when we have it there. To see this white bar in the NS / FF overview that users can identify their shots very fast, yes that's an advantage but once you click on your shot, you know anyway it's yours (because everyone knows what he has uploaded), then there is no use for it anymore to see it on your actual shot.
So in my opinion it should be kept in the overview yes, but not on the actual shot since it makes the snapshots look smaller.
If you say it must be there, maybe another fancy solution could be invented to make this bar not appear on the actual shot, for example put it under the shot a bit or some smaller sign could do the same job as well etc.
Would be keen to hear how other people think about it or if I am the only one who is annoyed by this white bar. :)
Good work, some points from me though: - locked movies alphabetically would be easier, not very necessary but also not very hard i think:)
- when someone is not logged in, on the home page a random (i think easy) snapshot appears. However when the shot contains nudity or gore this appears: Maybe nudity and gore shots should be excluded from that random thing on the home page
Edit: Damn I'm too retarded to remember how to show the picture directly in the forum:) feel free to change it Edit2: ah got it:)
Regarding the white bar that Fireball mentioned: I also find it a bit annoying, even in normal shots when it only shows after solving, because it always takes a few pixels away from the shot. My suggestion would be to move the white bar below the shot, maybe even below the 16:9 frame that stays black for smaller pictures.
I posted this before, but didn't heard back: a REPOST button when our shots are reject. So we can keep the solves, favourites and bookmarks, when we repost them.
@rulo ok i'll change that @alex68: alright too @fireball i'll stick to the white bar for now since its our shots its not really important, but i'll think of an another way to show it if people still complain @mikebozzio very good idea but that means a lot of work. I'm gonna definitely think about it and how handle it (great idea to keep the favs etc).
