Today i was cutting some black bars from some shots i have made this couple of days and since i work with photography i have a lot of plug ins/actions etc... I made some extreme changes in some that worked perfectly but then i though that it wouldn´t be fair for ppl that don´t do it.
what about some "auto color/level/contrast? Who use it and do "WTM people" support it?
I'm 100% with LordMyst here. Just cut the black bars away. Those bars are video artefacts. They don't belong to the movie. Any other alteration is altering the movie itself. It shoud be forbidden.
I actually enhanced the gamma on http://whatthemovie.com/shot/78024, because it was way too dark otherwise. That's the only time, and I must admit I hesitated big time.
Of course you can find exceptions where a LIGHT treatment is a good thing. But using the AUTO color/level/contrast of Photoshop is nothing but a really bad idea.
i agree with Myst, we shouldn't manipulate foto's. about half the time i solve shots i remembered the lighting and color tint.. i'm ok with a slight contrast change, but only if it's minor :)
The problem is that you find so many bad quality dvd. Even the theater copies are (actually were since the problem disappeared with the numeric) often not well balanced and many directors complain about that. Anyway, when you get a "film noir" that looks gray, you know that it is not the director's choice.
auto color/level/contrast always works even in HD blue ray movies. The only think it wont change is the color ( if the movie is original in its full glory ). But mainly, messing in photoshop, the result would/will be in our taste, and that doens´t always work. Personally I wont use it; only sizes and black bars.
I don't use any sort of filters or enhancements, not out of any ethical or aesthetic standpoint, but simply because I'm too fucking lazy to put in the effort. :p
Seriously: what are you talking about? Of course I photoshop all the snaps I post. Like everybody else (?).
Suddenly you make me doubt.
I don't take shots from the movies because it is strictly forbidden to rip author's work in France. I create my shots from A to Z: that is the purpose of the game, right? It is a PhotoShop Movie Theme Quizz, isn't it???
Please answer me because I work a lot on my shots.
In my Opinion nobody should "advance" his shots. Cause this site is about the original movies and therefore about the original shots. I often thaught this shot would be better if this person would be on the place seconds before with the background at the moment with the lightning few seconds later. Hell yeah, i would be a very good director ^^ But with every change you do to the snaps you degrade it. If the DVD-Quality is bad, then buy another or the Bluray or you have to admit it and post it either way cause everbody else will have the same DVD and that´s what´s all about.
You cannot go to the Louvre and say: "Oh, there´s no mustache on Mona Lisa´s face. But with one it would look much better..."
For example these both shot: (I posted them not long ago in the Replacement Thread, cause they are "photoshopped" with auto-gamma)
it wasn´t the intention of the director (i haven´t asked mr. tarantino but i think so, anyway) that it is that bright in the storage building so you should leave it the dark it is. You can recognize it though changing!
So hands away from any Photoshop-Action besides Black Bars! (if not intended)
